I just got fired today

So a little background, I’ve been looking around for a new job recently and begun the hiring process with a separate employer. This prospective employer requires you to do a physical as part of the hiring process. I had the physical scheduled for yesterday, problem was that I had to work. I spoke to my manager about it the day prior and told him I had a doctors appointment at 10 am. I said that I had to get some blood work done and I wasn’t looking forward to it since we were just chitchatting and he said it was cool if I came to work for a little bit, went to my appointment, then come back. He was under the impression apparently that I had ONLY just blood work to do from that conversation. I only brought up blood work because I wasn’t happy having to get blood drawn…

I only brought up blood work because I wasn’t happy having to get blood drawn because I hate needles so I was kind of just ranting about it.

I left out everything else because it wasn’t really any of his business what was going on at my private doctors appointment and I wasn’t legally obligated to tell him nor was he entitled to know in the first place. All he had to know was that I had a doctors appointment. I also wasn’t going to tell him that this doctors appointment was for a pre-employment screening because that would indicate that I’m leaving the company and I wasn’t 100% sure on whether I was actually leaving yet. Whether I got the job or not was contingent on me passing that medical so I wasn’t certain that I was leaving yet because if you fail one of those, you don’t get the job. I’m not going to tell them I’m leaving if I’m not certain that I’m leaving. I was only going to tell them when I was certain I got the job and put in my 2 weeks.

The next day when I had to go to the appointment, I showed up for work and he told me I was good to go so I left. I ended up getting there and waited a couple of hours because other applicants were getting their medical stuff done as well and I ended up being the last to go. By the time I finished just the medical alone, it was already 2:30. After they finished up with my medical, I had to do a psychological exam immediately after at the same place. That took another couple of hours. By the time I was finished with everything, it was already 4:30 and everyone leaves my workplace at 5. I had to drive 45 minutes to get there so it would take 45 minutes to get back to the office so I wouldn’t have made it in time. I texted one of my supervisors that and he just left it on read. I ended up just going home since I didn’t get there in time.

Fast forward to today. I get to work this morning and I run into my manager and I tell him “hey, it took longer than initially anticipated yesterday” and then he just started going off on me. He was saying how bloodwork doesn’t take all day to do and I told him that they had to do a full work up and he started going off about how I should’ve been more upfront about it and told him that it was a physical for another employer (a couple of my coworkers knew so it must’ve gotten back to him). He stated that he still would’ve let me go to the appointment had I just told him and that it was shady that I did that.

He proceeded to say that he almost fired me yesterday for that. He then said something along the lines of “I don’t have confidence in your integrity in your new career because you did this”. And that hit a nerve with me because I take integrity very seriously so I just backed off and went to go cool down so I didn’t start an argument and he left. He then came back a couple minutes later and called me into his office. He told me that based off my previous actions, they’re going to have to let me go and wish me luck in my career with my new employer. I then left and went home.

First time getting fired, bummer.
