Co-worker sleeps with another’s girlfriend. Somehow that’s my problem..

If this isn't the right place. Sorry. Just had to get this out there. So, there's this Police Officer. Young kid wants to do well, but he just refuses to listen to anybody. As a Sergeant I've sat down with him multiple times to try and explain what the expectation is and why we need him to do something a certain way. He says he understands but continues to do things his way. The problem I think is that the Commander thinks he's the GOAT. This kid is very good at one small, and important facet of the job and every time he does it, he runs to the Commanders office to tell him about it.

But when it comes to everything else, he kind of sucks. It's to the point that he frequently has to have other Officers come and handle situations. Sometimes he has put other Officers in dangerous situations. Then these Officers have to sit and watch the Commander give him awards (Officer of the quarter ECT) which gives him a big head and he acts arrogant. Thus, increasing the rift between him and other Officers. The frustrating part for me is that it's difficult to try and teach this kid what he's doing wrong when the boss says he's the only Officer doing their job. I've sat down with the Commander and explained my frustrations but all that was said was that I needed to put more effort into mentoring him.

Well, I guess this kids' girlfriend went to a party with a few of the Officers (all were off duty) and ended up hooking up with another Officer. Well word got around quick and back to the kid. The thing is that he has created such a rift between himself and his fellow Officers that all the other Officers are high fiving the guy who hooked up with his girlfriend… in front of him.

This kid comes to me and says he wants to file a complaint against the other Officer for stealing his girlfriend. (she broke up with him for the other guy shortly after) saying that it was Officer misconduct. I told the kid there was nothing I could for him as the Officers were off duty, not at a work event, and not on city property. Furthermore, there was nothing that could be done for a consensual sexual encounter between unmarried adults. Later I was pulled into the Commanders Office and chewed out for displaying poor leadership, and not being supportive of the staff. Now I am involved in an HR complaint for what was described to me as “creating a toxic/hostile work enviroment”
