Interviewed on Tuesday for what I thought would be a great position at a small, but reputable, biomedical company.

The position was a dynamic front office administrator that would include marketing and recruiting. The first half of the interview went very well with the current program coordinator. He did disclose that he had only joined the staff four months ago along with half of the current staff. So, most of the employees had only been there for four months. During the second half of the interview I spoke with the founder and CEO. That mostly went great until he asked me about compensation. The pay was listed as “up to $22/hr”. I asked for $22 because with cost of living I can’t afford to live on less than that. He said that he liked to start his employees on the lower end. The real kicker is that then he asked me about my gap in employment around the pandemic, and when I had my son. He started complaining that people “over value” themselves, and he’s tired of turnover because employees leave for better opportunities. I wanted to tell him that if he payed employees appropriately then he probably wouldn’t have such a high turnover.

Ugh. I will still take the job if they offer because I am desperate for employment, but I will definitely continue to look for something better if they don’t pay appropriately for the position.
