So for context I have been a cashier at a local grocery store for around 1.5 years now. The store is run by 3 lead managers, and recently they’ve been desperately searching for a night manager. (since they set their own hours they always choose not to give themselves night shift and they’d rather hire someone else). It’s been about a month and nobody has applied for the role so today I was called into the office and told I was being “promoted” to night manager.
My “promotion” changes my job from running the register to closing the store which includes cleaning the bathrooms, vacuuming/mopping the store, emptying trash, facing merchandise, etc. (no actual manager duties) while still keeping my exact same pay as a cashier which is already low to begin with. I now have to come in 5 days a week from 4pm until midnight.
I told them I’d rather keep my cashier job but they told me everyone needs to “pitch in for the team” and this is what’s required of me right now. They also told me I should be “grateful” for this new opportunity/promotion.
TLDR managers give me a fake promotion because they’re too selfish to rotate night shift between themselves even though there’s 3 of them
