I've worked in my industry for a long time, and have a particular skill set. Current job has lots of opportunities for people to cross train except for me. I'm a “SME (Subject Material Expert)” they call it, so I've been stuck in the same role, and I'm the only person at my level stuck like this. Multiple people have told me I would make a potive impact in other departments because of my experience. For a year “Yeah, yeah we'll get you out of their soon”
When the company downsized and fired the previous lead and left just me and another person; I stepped up fill the lead role. I told my boss if I was truly going to be pigeon holed into a position that I couldn't get out of, I need to get paid for it. “You have to do it for a little while to prove that you can do it” he said 3 months ago.
Last week: got back from PTO, and have shed all responsibility while I was gone. They ask me questions and I reply that I'm not sure. I only do the work assigned to me instead of seeking it out and do it just fast enough. Not managing their spreadsheets for them anymore or any extra stuff, just the basic shit I got hired to do because that's all I'm good for apparently.
