Ireland announced a new scheme offering generous cash grants to people willing to move to approximately 30 islands of the country's wild west coast. But some prerequisites have to be met to receive the funds.
The “Our Living Islands” scheme offers up to €84,000 (about $92,000) to people who want to move to the beautiful, sparsely populated islands on the Atlantic coast — which are not connected to the mainland by bridges and cut off by the tides.
“The aim of this policy is to ensure that sustainable, vibrant communities can continue to live — and thrive — on the offshore islands for many years to come,” according to the government.
I live in NYC, and waste so much of my life on the subway, and half of my salary in rent. I would love for the USA to do a program like this where they encourage people to move to less populated parts of the country. But what do you do once you get there? Until we overthrow the evil empire, we still need a job to live. But many companies are forcing people back into the office and hate WFH policies. These kinds of programs only work in the long term if we mandate WFH policies that could help relieve skyrocketing rents and let people move out of cities that have become way too expensive and crowded.
