Is it legal for companies to pay one group of employees less than another for doing the same job?

For context, I work for a shipping company offloading planes. Once a week for about two years or so, they forced us to help the people who sorted freight because they were short staffed and too cheap to hire more people. The thing is, the people who normally sorted freight make about $2/hr more than we do, and they didn’t adjust our pay for the time we were in there. I know the US’s labor laws are pretty shit, but is there any chance this kind of thing is illegal? It seems fishy at the very least to me.
