Is This Legal? Overtime Question

I live in Chicago. I work full time, (40 hours/week), as a contracted office attendant for a big corporate company. Yesterday, I had to stay an extra hour, (9 hours total), to learn how to operate a new machine the office had got. I told the people I report to in this office to email my manager and let him know that I had to stay for an extra hour. Instead of giving me overtime pay for that extra hour, my manager told me that I can just leave an hour early on Friday. Keep in mind: I do not get paid for any time worked over 8 hours, not even 1 second; my wage stops exactly 8 hours from the moment I clock in each day. I don’t care about leaving early; I want money for working that extra hour. Is it legal for my job to not pay…
