Work hours and over time

Hey everyone, was just curious if this is common. I work for a company, been here for a few months. We work m-f hours vary for employees. Usually most people work 8-12 hours consistently. My question is what’s the legal mumbo-jumbo for working 8+ hours a day and then being on call? I talked to a co worker who worked for 13-15 hours. Was off two hours. Got called to work and then worked for another 8 hours almost. Our job includes driving to locations but not hauling anything but ourselves and our tools. We don’t get compensated for the over time besides being paid OT if you’ve got 40 hours. Consistently you’re on call multiple times a week at night time. And on some weekends.
