Being hospitalized would be better

I’ve recently realized I work in a toxic place. There was good and bad before but recent events have made it clear, my employer doesn’t care about the well-being of its employees. I’m salaried, which means that I work until I’m done, not until a set time. Yes salaried work can be great and has some good security. But lately, I’ve been working into the late hours of the night and starting as soon as I roll over in bed. We’re talking between 55 and 80 hours a week. I started telling my employer I had more work than I could handle, pointing to a number of factors that were outside of my control and served to drastically increase my work.

The answer I got was I should make a pitch about why I had too much work and where my work could go. Weeks of back and forth on this point, including multiple emails from me saying things like “I’m stretched too thin”, “I don’t have capacity”, and “I need something taken off my plate” have gotten me nowhere.

Message today was it comes off as lazy and disorganized to raise a problem of too much work and that I should just deal with it. This was followed with offers for further meetings but with the caveat that they can’t guarantee they’ll do anything. Basically, why don’t you spend more time talking to us so your days are even longer.

I only came to appreciate how toxic this is when I found myself dreaming about being injured so I wouldn’t have to go to work. Thinking, if I was in the hospital they would have to give my work to someone else. But I know those are messed up thoughts and the problem here is my employer.

Long long way of saying I’m quitting as soon as I find a new job.
