Are religious beliefs holding back reasonable pay?

I realize that it's anecdotal considering this is only my personal experience, nevertheless, the religious people I've known so far put the blame for one's lack of financial stability squarely on the individual. Claiming they're lazy, stupid, etc. but essentially, deserving the suffering that comes with being poor. Here's a couple quotes I've heard 2~3 times this year, used to support their argument: Proverbs 14 23 Work and you will earn a living; if you sit around talking you will be poor. 24 Wise people are rewarded with wealth, but fools are known by their foolishness.
