I’m leaving a job because of extreme micromanagement and blatant favouritism, manager has it out for me until the end.

I posted once before on here about leaving my old job, when they genuinely quadrupled my workload by doubling the areas I was in charge of (I work in finance, so would be budgeting, forecasting and tracking costs for each area), and also giving me the same exact workload of the company we merged with once the person who did it in that company left. I left the job in a bit of a rush as I was completely burnt out, working late, weekends, and dreaming about my job. It was a huge shame as the manager there was the best one I've ever had, until the new role and merge caused a restructure and I got a new manager anyway. The new role has paid less, but I was honestly happy thinking I'd have an easier workload, the manager seemed cool over the video interviews we had, and overall…

The new role has paid less, but I was honestly happy thinking I'd have an easier workload, the manager seemed cool over the video interviews we had, and overall it fit into my long term career goals to stay there for a while, complete my accounting exams and then move on.

To cut a long story short, the role has been easy enough, but the extreme daily micromanaging got too much for me. I also ended up with one person as my manager, but another as a senior teammate who was the main person assigning me tasks and checking up on me, so it felt like I had two managers constantly keeping tabs on and questioning me. They would have a 1-2-1 an hour before mine, and then the official manager would call me in and ask loaded questions like “how did you feel this task went?”, with obvious knowledge of what the other teammate had filled her in on. I also want to highlight that from week 2 they were eager for me to own tasks, and there was a weird pressure of learning the task, but also asking a lot of questions when you got stuck, rather than figuring it out yourself which is my preference. The training I got was really subpar, as the teammate training me rambled on and on and often went on unrelated tangents. It was information overload, and to be honest in my second week I would not expect to be back to back, learning one task after another. I learnt the role fairly soon, with a few mistakes here and there, but it was a very critical place with mistakes often discussed to the death, and no praise ever given for a good piece of work, or beating a deadline etc.

Now I get into the favouritism of the teammate, let's call her Amy. It makes me sad thinking about it too much, but she got away with murder while I wouldn't get away with not paying for a 30p bag. When she made mistakes, it was fine, when I did I just had to explain what happened and listen again and again. It was Amy's job to check my work, so the responsibility of something not quite perfect being sent on was fully on her. She got a new job within 2 months of me being here, and it made perfect sense that the reason she was so distracted and also never online on Slack before 10AM was that she was clearly applying and interviewing for jobs. She also came in late to the office with no repercussions and took ages in doing task sometimes which was never called out. The main point of unfairness was on booking time off. I was told a million times to check with her when taking leave, and my manager did say she should also check with me (only after I pointed out that it's not fair Amy always gets to pick first). I had a family issue and needed time off over the course of a month, Amy was also going on holiday for that month and would be working part of the holiday, so of course she went in and took all the best days (Fridays/Mondays/days joined with bank holidays). I was caring for a disabled family member and still had to pick the second best dates, simply because she already filled it in an excel sheet that I didn't even know about.

My manager always pushed us to take holiday in a specific, non-busy month. As soon as Amy handed in her notice, a week after I put in my leave for that month and was asked “did you clear it with Amy? It's not a good time to go, you need to do a handover.” Bear in mind, Amy's notice period was 3 months, I wanted one week off. Amy herself had a week off, booked with no issues. She made such a drama I got pissed the fuck off and shared that it's unfair. Only then did my manager send out an email saying we need to share all holiday between the three of us. Surprise surprise, as soon as she said that, Amy went in and booked 3 holidays, again taking the best times. There was one bank holiday a few weeks after my original requested week, so I told my manager I'll change to that, as going on holiday in my original week was actually becoming quite expensive (we booked last minute as didn't know if we would actually travel, but the week was going to be taken off to relax in regardless). Apparently Amy had verbally changed one of her weeks to this week, and they were again saying I couldn't have it off, as Amy had it off. I told them I had no knowledge of her changing it, and that the holiday would be cheaper then so I insisted to have it then. Something to note is that we already had Amy's replacement, an internal guy, join our team, and the overlap between myself and Amy was only 2 days. This guy was happy to cover, and I could've had my dream holiday, but no.

Manager insisted for me to come back one whole day before our busy period, 'in case anything went wrong'. We had Amy and the new guy, but no, she still wanted me around for an extra day. It made my trip one day short of the perfect break, and I knew she did it to be spiteful.

During Amy's 3 month notice, she did only one day in the office (minimum is 2). She was vocal about this being to save time and money. Now that I am finally leaving and going to a new place, I've been going in once too, and recently my manager said in a team meeting (so me, her and that replacement guy) “oh, everyone was in yesterday, were you sick that you didn't come?”. I told her I was planning to come in a different day, and her response was “you need to come in twice. I know you're leaving but still”. As I was on a video call, I just nodded with a bit of a grimace, but I am not planning to go in twice at all. I have a few weeks left here hopefully and I am trying to stay motivated and focused, but it's real fucking hard when she's being like this. Family is telling me not to care, but I can't handle the anxiety of her calling me out.
