Two days ago now. I didn’t actually expect them to call me but I asked for a manager at this clothing store so I can introduce myself and tell them I applied. Mind you they have two large now hiring signs outside. I asked for the manager and she came out of her office. Asked what position I applied and my availability. I told her which one and that it’s open. Asked if I could write my name and number down which I did, told me she’ll call me. No call back. I know yesterday was a holiday but like.. fuck. Yes I’ve applied to other places but this one is the most convenient for me due to locations and time of day/hours. Fuck
I've worked at this health care facility for about 5 years. The pay is poor to say the least, but the work load (at least used to be) relatively light and the environment relatively stress free. but since covid it's taken a complete nose dive in the moral of staff and the amount if work expected from us keeps going up. So, I went on call some months ago. I'm getting older and my back just can't handle the amount of physical work, that seems to keep increasing. (Not the same with the fucking pay of course!) anyways, I picked up a NOC (overnight) shift last night for the holiday pay. I'm sick today. Hello, I have been working food service at a university for about 6 months and realizing that the job isn't as all that it is cracked up to be. During the summer recess we have been open to summer camps and the legion sponsored boys state program and I feel like I have room for advancement and I am hitting burnout with a week's long vacation coming up for my parents wedding. Not sure if another job is gonna be worthwhile as there isn't anything for tech related stuff where I live.
Any teachers leave the classroom world and go corporate or to something else? Better pay, work/life balance, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Companies obsession with ‘no sitting’
I find it incredibly interesting that companies still drill in that standing is super important. it's insane to me that the solution to cashiers being tired of standing is to provide a cushioned floor mat, as if the issue is that 'standing is uncomfortable' of course standing is fucking uncomfortable when you do it for 8-12 hours. part of me wants to give benefit of the doubt and applaud higher ups because maybe it really is beneficial for a company to have their employees stand for “company appeal”. but in actuality I know that it's to rundown a person's energy. there's still a stigma of “if you're not in physical discomfort you're clearly not working” I work in security and this new location is an older lobby that used to have staffing. now they want added security so here I am switching shifts to work. the rule is 'no sitting…
Capitalism: build into infinity
I've had many jobs (retail, hospitality, graphic design, package delivery, desk jobs), but I've finally moved into the tech sector. It's been… interesting. I'm paid a living wage for my area and my team is actually diverse. I thought “things would be different” at this job from those 2 points alone, but there's definitely been problems. I thought the company's product (software related)had a lot of problems that haven't been fixed in the time I've been there, nearly 2 years. Figured I was just imagining things, these things take time too, right? Found out from a coworker that recently quit, who had a higher position, that basically the company is building on new parts and letting the broken ones rot. Stolen labor
At work, they put a notice saying that if we clock in before 8:50 am they can and will correct our time to 8:50 am. I had clocked in at 8:48 or 8:49 because mind you there wasn’t any verbal conversations just a note by the time clock. So at the end of the pay week I checked my time and all of the days I had clocked in at 8:48 or 8:49 they had all been fixed to 8:50. I haven’t checked our handbook . But is this legal?
