My new job is retail and part time. I have worked there almost a month and I have open availability. I only get scheduled one or two days a week and nearly every day I work I get sent home after only working 2 hours. They claim because they haven’t met their profit goals for the day but I’m usually the only person that gets sent home and other people get to complete their entire shifts. I wonder if they over hired and are quiet firing me? The store made $10k over their expected goal yesterday but today I lost 4 hours of (abysmal) pay. Corporate greed and at will labor laws are the obvious answer to the reason they can make 50k in a single day and won’t even pay me for a whole shift making under $15 an hr. However, I’m seriously curious why they hired me in…
Like the title says. I just finished a 15 week unpaid internship with a digital media company as a producer. I was familiar with the network which has millions of viewers and the show I worked on was very popular which got me excited at the start. I went in seeking journalism experience. I took the internship (unpaid) during my final semester of my senior year of college, which now ends in one week. Entering the internship I thought it would be a cool experience to learn hands on but figured they wouldn’t ask too much of me considering it was unpaid. Turns out, they had me waking up at 7am and working till 4pm three days a week. Within one week they had me fully writing, producing, and editing my own stories which got turned to YouTube/FB etc. videos. They began asking me to stay after and produce stories…
Changed our pay date without notice. Proceeded to claim it will be on the same 2 week interval next check. It wasn't. This is the text exchange with the GM that followed. Turns out she didn't like the owner and corporate supervisor knowing she's been selling expired food. I've been a GM at 4 locations and over a decade with the company. I wanted to focus on a different career and deliver pizzas while doing online school. Couldn't stand working in this environment any longer though. Went and got a manager job at a not big 3 pizza place for 63k/ year 3 days later. I should have let her fire me though. Turns out these OSHA fines can completely bury these franchise locations/small businesses. I called the owner following the texts to let him know I'm stepping away. Letting her fire me would have been the best way for…
One month’s notice [UK]
I have worked at my fast food job for nearly a year now, and when I quit I will not work my full one month notice. It is minimum wage and I truly could not put my heart and soul into this place after all it has done to me. My coworker has been here for 2-3 months. He received a great job offer, but our boss said he needs to work the full one month’s notice before he can go. So his job offer expired and he is still here. Turning down £16 an hour for minimum wage at a place he already hates. How the fuck is this fair?
“just kidding, I do not care”
Reading the fine print.
Like most things on the internet, I feel like work culture has devolved into a 2 party system. Theres this unsung understanding that your either an anarchist/socialist hippie who just wants a welfare check, or a slaving, mindless boot/grunt who is convinced they wont die before payout or being fired. The reality is neither. I dont know of a single person who doesnt want to do something with their life. Some sort of task, goal, mission, they want to do things. They are told they can make a difference, that they are the next generation in a long line of innovators, and that they can have a good life if they try hard. But then you get out into the world and realize thats not true: unless you are propped up via old money, nepotism or some other extraordinary means (the LEAST likely being that you are actually gifted above…
I've already posted in here once, regarding my father's plan for me to pay my employer once I get an apprenticeship. But now, I started thinking about how to survive in case one has a job. Both money-wise and time-wise. As an European, jobs around my location give off a salary of USD 12-18 on the basis of 40 hours of work per week. However, this is far from what living costs. Using the median salary of USD 15 per hour, this makes a monthly salary of 2760 bucks. Taking 40% off the gross salary for the means of taxes and insurance, we're left with 1656 bucks. Taking about 1200 bucks away from that, that's rent for 540sqft – without electricity, water or gas – Buying a house costs millions. Assuming one goes to work with public transport, which only works more or less tolerable because I live in a…
