Why do people care?

I see so many people pushing hard in their jobs at this company. I understand that can get you promotions years down the line, but just job hop. I’m putting in minimal effort everyday but doing just enough to not get fired, so I have time and energy to apply to higher paying roles. Why do so many people treat their jobs like they are sharing in the company profits? People here care so much to reduce costs or get another client, but who cares? We are so busy anyways that we won’t be laid off. I’ve been actively applying now to more social justice and aid organizations, or government positions, because private sector is just dumb. I don’t care about anything here

Mens Rea and white collar crime

It seems ridiculously difficult to prove intent in labour situations. Should this requirement of intent be removed? Real jail time will never happen (and would just create well compensated fall guys), and most fines are wholly inadequate currently and hard to establish. Or at least balance of probabilities? So many employers de facto establish wage theft but can easily skirt without easily demonstrated and documented pieces of evidence. Should these infractions become fines based on like 4x all potential revenue of choices plus cost?

Are coverletters worth it?

I work in marketing and am currently underemployed due to my hours being cut so I have been job searching since early January. I have applied to about 130 jobs since then. I got started on indeed and I have started taking the shotgun approach and haven’t been doing cover letters much. Since it typically requires at least 15-30 minutes in order to trailer my cover letter, save the document, and submit it. I’m not able to apply to such a large quantity of jobs. Especially because some of them require you to create a whole account in their website. I figured it may be better to get more eyes on my application than focus on quality. Do you guys think a cover letter makes a difference based on your experience? I hate to waste more time if it’s not going to do anything. Most of them just end in…

Going above and beyond, doing more than is asked, is rarely rewarded.

Wanted to share a story of how being better than requested can harm you more than help you. In my early 20s, I was looking for work and went to a temp service as I have done before when I needed work. I was sent to an ice manufacturer and asked if I could do some painting. The employer said he expected the painting to take about 2 weeks to complete. It was simple painting, we had to paint some doorways and some handrails. That was it. Easy stuff. One other guy and I arrive on a Monday morning and are shown the areas the employer wanted painting. We started painting and very quickly realized that the employer/manager was poor with time management. We ended up finishing the painting in 2 days. This should have been it. The manager was allotted funds and time for a project to take 2…

I screwed my self by being loyal to my team

I'm an engineer at a really big corporation. This is my first job, and this is the most amount of money I have ever made. I have been working for about 3 to 4 years with no raise, no bonus, and literally the base line benefits (PTO and health insurance). I was contracted initially and was told, everyone does this, and it usually lasts 3-year before e we higher you in. OK, sounds good I like the job and i like helping people. Fast forward to last year, and i began asking my management as well as my contract house for a way to increase my pay and maintain the same position. In short, I did not get a response from my contract house and my management pretty much told me, we can't do anything for you. As much as it pained me to hurt my team, I started to…

Dog sitting place I visit fired all the night workers and are forcing salaried employees to work those shifts with no additional compensation. Is this legal? CA, USA

So just as the titles explains, a doggy daycare place I used to use has fired all the night shift workers and are using their day shift managers who are “salaried” to pick up the shifts. Because they are “salaried” they are not getting paid for this. The business is trying to exploit salaried workers by firing hourly workers and literally just giving their hours to salaried employees who are except from being paid for additional hours worked. Is this legal? It sounds so effed up. Surely that not how salaried work is?
