Avoid Getting A Job At A Place That’s Not Even Open Yet

Hey been wanting to share this but I couldn’t figure out how to word it properly, but screw it. Had 2 jobs before April: retail job and bar job. Got sick of the former due to its toxic work environment and ridiculous low pay for all the backbreaking work I put in, and started a job search back in January. Took me a while, but I finally got hired by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream back in the beginning of April for an ice cream shop they’re planning on opening in North Park of San Diego, CA, and I was excited to join, partially due to it being in my neighborhood and promising it looked, and also partially due to me trying to quit retail. Because the shop was still being built at the time back then, me and every other person who also got hired were doing the onboarding process…

Because the shop was still being built at the time back then, me and every other person who also got hired were doing the onboarding process with a couple Jeni’s supervisors at a coffee shop in the area. Once that was done, they told me that they were going to do a team meeting on April 29th, and then the actual training will take place the next day.

While I was waiting for the ice cream shop to open up, I also managed to get another job at a local cafe and was hired on the spot, therefore giving me the financial confidence to finally quit retail and also finally achieve one of my goals, which was to finally be a barista again as I love working with coffee. Now here’s the thing: I told the owner of the cafe on the day she hired me about my situation with the ice cream shop and that I could do whatever shifts she wanted me to do until the 29th, and she was fine with that.

So everything went well at first; I was doing 2-3 training shifts for a couple weeks at the cafe and starting out with food running, bussing, and running the register, all the while waiting for the ice cream shop to open up. But then I got notified that the dates at the ice cream shop were being pushed back during my second week of training at the cafe. No more meeting, and my training was pushed back to the 11th. Thought nothing of it, but I still informed the owner of it, and she was confused, but still fine. Continued on as usual, and then another notification came from the ice cream shop AGAIN and this happened in the later part of the same week, and it was that the 11th got pushed back to the 13th. At this point, I was getting worried. I informed the cafe owner, and she told me that even though I was doing a great job, because of what’s going with Jeni’s and their inability to have a set schedule, that it will be difficult to put me down on the cafe’s schedule with me still being new and stuff despite me telling her that my availability opened up and that I wanted to work 4 days a week with them. Then the 13th changed into the 19th. What the hell?

In the end, because of the ice cream shop, the cafe ended up not scheduling me ANY hours at all, and the coming week will be the 4th work when I’m not working there. i was still working at the bar, but I only work there 1 night a week and they can’t give me any more hours. And I’d love to do food deliveries again, but I literally can’t as I don’t have a working vehicle and my stamina sucks on the bicycle.

I’ve since quit the ice cream shop and managed to get a different job at a local brewery. I’m doing whatever I can to survive and not spend too much money, but the ice cream shop messed me up, and still is atm. Bills are about to be due, my motorbike is still out of service, my rent is OVER DUE, and I haven’t made enough from both my cafe job and my bar job to even pay some of them off, especially rent. I was fine with only paying half again, but not paying off the entire rent, and the late rent fee on top of that? Not really. Just hope I can pay rent again and get it out of the way.

DO NOT get a job at a place that’s not even open yet unless you have enough money to survive on in case stuff like this happens.
