For the second time this year, I acquired a job and the offer was rescinded. [Rant]

The first time was in March – I applied at a company my mom worked for, for a work from home position. The reason the offer was rescinded is because I went for the drug screen when my medical card was expired (even though it was less than 4 weeks expired and it still would’ve been in my system… I just didn’t have the money to renew and was trying to wait until I got my first paycheck. But whatever, I understand). This second time I applied at the company my step dad works for, also a work from home position. Got the job, everything was all good. I had to go through a temp agency – I spoke with them on Monday and was told that everything was approved with my background check and drug screen/medical marijuana info, they were just waiting to hear back about my new start…

Is my boss allowed to require 50hrs/week if I’m on salary?

I live in Pennsylvania. I’ve been here for 8 months and when I started he said it was a minimum of 50 hours for the position. I was hired to be a culinary director but the person who was leaving that role ended up staying- so now there are two of us. To fill the rest of my time, I’m now responsible for all kinds of different things. I do leaf blowing, I drive our residents around, plan and execute day trips, help with landscaping work, distribute medications, etc. the list goes on and on. None of these are things I’m used to, I’ve been a chef my whole working life (I’m 30 and have been cooking since I was 16). I am frustrated because those things are not what I want to do everyday, I wanted to be a culinary director (which is what I got hired for). Is…

Abusing workers comp and still coming in to work to party plan.

I work for CPS and during the school year we are always getting an influx of cases. On top of high cases we are short staffed and are always getting slammed with cases. I have 12 family's I'm servicing and probably more cause I am still on rotation to get a new case. Two weeks ago my coworker was doing a supervised visit with a family, when she heard yelling, screaming, and cursing at the room next door. A client began acting belligerent with one of the CP workers and began kicking her. My coworker asked the other CP worker if she needed help, and she told her yes, to grab the child. The mother ended up kicking my coworker in the leg and busted the lip of a security guard with a toy. She was given 7 stitches on her lip. My coworker stayed that she was fine and…

On how employers think about relation between wages and staff shorts: a class war.

Often on this subreddit we are talking about how short staffed employers won't rise wages and how it would solve problems with finding people to hire – well we think it would solve things, because may you like it or not we think in old capitalist way – that companies and employers should compete with each other. THAT'S WRONG. THAT'S NOT HOW MODERN CAPITALISTS/COMPANIES/EMPLOYERS THINK. Modern employers think in economic classes. For them it's “us” – companies, employers, investors, people with money and “them” – workers that have to sell their time. When you look at relation between wages and short staff through economic class lenses there is no point in offering employees better wages to work at my company, because if I will give my employees rise to attract more workers to work for me, I may have enough stuff to do work for small period of time, but…

Horrible Call Center Temp Job

My first post on here, long time reader and had to share something that happened to me back in 2003 when I was living in Orlando. I was between jobs, and working with a few Temp agencies. I got a 1 day job working, what they called, a receptionist position. I show up and it's a very stereotypical “call center pit”. My job was to sit in the raised cubicle over-looking the 12 callers and monitor them. I didn't have to answer phones or anything, just sit there, observe, and document anytime I saw one of the callers doing anything other than making calls for more than 10 seconds. They gave me a printed out sheet of paper in a 2×6 grid and I just made a tick mark for every violation I saw. There were 8 managers over these 12 callers. They did absolutely nothing all day. One would…

Colleague dies. Company doesn’t seem to care.

One of my colleagues died this past week. It was a heart-attack. This person leaves behind a spouse and children. The company made no statement. The company’s CEO made no statement. What actually happened was that one of the bigwigs in the company put together a gofundme for the employee. It feels as if the part where the company cares about you is now outsourced to the underlings. Shouldn’t surprise me. I had a death in the family and they were calling me 2 days after asking why my work wasn’t being done. Then I got demoted on the way to presumably being thrown out the door during the next round of firings/layoffs

Workplace Drama and sick pets.

Back here to bitch about my job because I don’t know where else to do it. My cat is currently sick and I’m taking her to the emergency vet. I told my boss and literally her only response was “OK thanks”. I get it it’s not your cat it’s 7 o’clock in the morning. Still, if anyone on this team had asked her she would’ve been very supportive. but not me. I’m the problem one because I regularly go to the doctor and therapy, I take off when Im sick, when the incredibly loud and distracting work environment became too much I got a reasonable accommodation. I advocate for myself and put myself first. I feel bad for her, the team had to convince her to go to a doctor appointment at one point, she almost never takes time off and when she does she still works on her vacation,…
