Good news – Bunnings Australia announces 4 day work week option

Still 38hrs/week, so longer days than usual but the 4 day work week is finally making its way to Australia! For those not from Australia, Bunnings is a massive employer similar to Home Depot. They’ve also announced agreement to a 10.5% payrise for 40,000 employees over the next 3 years which is good but should have been more, given the current inflation in Aus, and it should have been for all employees but the main headline here is the 4 day week.

Employer says my last paycheck will be minimum wage since I did not give a two week notice.

I work at a preschool making $13/hr, paid every other week. On Friday, I gave my boss notice that the following Friday (the 26th) would be my last day, making it a one week notice rather than the expected two. My boss informed me that because of that, I would only be paid minimum wage on my last paycheck, which will be on the 26th. Since I was in the middle of a pay cycle, that would mean that even if I had just decided to quit on the spot, I still would've received only $7.25/hr for the week I'd already worked, under the impression that I'd be receiving $13/hr. Assuming I work next week, that means my paycheck for two weeks of work will be only $507 instead of $910. Is this wage theft? Is there any way to get my full pay? Edit: Location is Georgia, USA

Think my former place of employment is giving bad recommendations

I worked at Whole Foods for about 2 years but left on some questionable terms. I wouldn't say bad, but I made a joke (about Whole Foods) while I was working that one of the upper managers did not like and we get into a verbal argument. Thought we were joking around but turned out he was angry. Flash forward two months later and applying to 15 different retail jobs. It's the same old story. They call me in. Look at my resume. Say they just need to run a background check and will call me when it's finished and hire me. Never get back to me. Won't return phone calls. Is there any way to find out if they are saying negative things about me?

What’s the best comeback to attempted manipulation you’ve witnessed/performed?

I just love hearing how others have turned the tables on bullying bosses/supervisors/etc. I'll start it off; a few years ago, I was working the night shift in an injection molding shop. It was not a great place to work, expectations were high, pay was bottom of the barrel low, and even on midnights when the brass wasn't around to impress, the supervisors felt the need to be up everyone's ass, micromanage everything, and make things generally unpleasant for everyone. I'd worked about 8 or 9 6-day work weeks in a row. This is especially rough on midnights because unless you force yourself to stay up all day when you get home on Saturday morning, it's gonna feel like you had 0 days off when you have to go back in Sunday night. So the supervisor comes to me on Thursday night (our Friday) as we're on our way to…

It’s time to start eating beanie weenies

Y’all, let me start off by saying this has been a very financially hard year for me so far, as I’m sure it has been for many. I just lost my home to sheer greed and gentrification, very rapidly and very unexpectedly – however that’s a story for another sub/time. That being said, other things have impacted my savings to the point of extinction and had I a less supportive community, I would be living in my car. All of this to say, I have made it clear to the owners of the establishment that I work at multiple times over the course of the year that things have been tight. Their response is often that if I want more money I should work more (I’m already full time) and can come in early/stay late. When I lost my house, they were on vacation out of the country, so my…

Do you think the “lying flat” movement is taking the world by storm or is it on the decline?

There are many good reasons why the “lying flat” movement would be popular especially among young people, and this applies not just in China but in many competitive societies such as other Asian countries as well as the West: The rising cost of living has made it increasingly difficult for young people to afford basic necessities, let alone buy a home or start a family. Many young people feel that they are unable to succeed no matter how hard they work. The job market is extremely competitive, and many young people are unable to find jobs that match their skills and interests. The “lying flat” movement is a sign of the growing disillusionment among young people in the world. It is a rejection of the traditional values of hard work and striving for success. It is a call for a more relaxed and less materialistic lifestyle. It is a protest…
