In 2020, the non-profit Walnut Street Theatre laid me & my colleagues off with no pay. The theatre received an initial $1.4 mil PPP loan. The President of the Board who is also the Artistic Director paid himself a record $1+ million that year during the shutdown and had $850K+ in PPP loans forgiven.

What is the benefit of wage compression?

I can see why a lot of companies do the scummy things they do as they give them more money or power/control over employees. But I have a hard time seeing how paying new workers more than current ones benefits them. Is it a side effect of the company being desperate to fill a roll so they have to rase the wage to fill the gaps? Or is it an intentional strategy they use to run off current older workers?

A little good news

I know that this sub is mostly focused on pointing out the shitty situations the majority of us deal with working in the absolutely fucked job market we all have to live in but I wanted to share some good news from where I work. I work at a non profit so the pay isn't that great, which is standard in this kind of work since you know non profit, but its enough to keep my head above water which had gotten harder to do since the pandemic but some of that is made up for with good bennies. Come yesterday I got an email that my director fought for a 10% increase in pay to all of our staff to specifically combat inflation and that is on top of our regular annual raises. It really makes me feel appreciated and honestly the work we do and people I work…

Who here has no desire to work?

Don't get me wrong, all of this talk about unionizing, fighting for better workers rights, a living wage, and so on is good and all. But are there people here who are about work abolition and wanting to live a work free lifestyle?

Resources for Tipped Employees?

A couple of months ago on a local server's group, I made a little bit of a name for myself for calling out a local corrupt business who was stealing wages from their employees and all around abusing them. Fast forward to last night, a server from a different local restaurant reached out to me to ask if it's normal for employers to take portions of their overall tips, as well as portions of their hourly pay for taxes. What's catching me is that what's pulled isn't based on the tips they declare but rather their sales. As we all know, Wage Theft is the most commonly committed form of theft, and Servers are specifically at risk of wage theft. I'm a bit of a numbers guy but I'm no accountant. Are there resources out there showing how to check and see if your employer is unfairly taking wages from…
