Big Tech employee here..just gotta get some perspective

So, been with “a extremely large social Media company” for almost 5 years next month. We tend to get the news that layoffs are happening per the main stream media outlets, which sucks on another level, but given that they’re laying off another 10k between now and May, I’m kinda shitting my pants. I do well there. Perform admirably. Worked on massive global projects, made crazy change unbeknownst to the users, but hugely impactful for internal processes to increase efficiency. Here’s the perspective ask for those laid off before (because this is my first time experiencing this thru various Fortune 500 companies), should I care any further? My impact is on people and their growth, primarily, but genuinely, I could care less about the mission, the weaponized values, and direction. It was a blast to work there the past few years, but it’s turned into every other corporation out there.…

I have a condition that causes my lungs to leak air and it hurts. My boss threatened me with termination if I called off because of it again

I'm 16f and in 2013 I was hospitalized for chest pain where it was found that I had a bubble on my lung that popped and caused air to leak. It got mostly better until January 4th 2022 where I experienced similar pains and was hospitalized again. Same issue although this time I haven't made a full recovery yet and I've been to the doctors for it to get some kind of note to explain why I have to call off often. Friday I called off because I was having trouble catching my breath and it hurt and my boss told me that if I called off again I'd be fired. It had been 2 months since my last call off and she acts like it's an every other day instance and yesterday I had to work an 8 hour shift and was out of breath and in pain the…

over Heard an interesting conversation about newbie truck drivers.

We were unloading a truck this week and the truck driver was actually helping us. We don't have a loading dock so we have to drag heavy loads by chain and forklift to the end of the trailer to get to them with our forklift. (I could go on a rant about how unsafe I feel doing it) anyway he was actually helping us with the chain. The truck driver and my supervisor ended up on an old person rant about how young drivers don't help. I appreciate the help but technically they don't have to. It's not part of their job and I totally understand not wanting to help. Then the driver told a story about a new hire at his company who was sent out to make a delivery. It was just then they the company found out the new driver can't drive a manual transmission. The driver…

My boss is wacko, blames me for everything.

My boss blames me for things that do not even make sense. My colleague was sick and he missed work. My boss told me at work in his office “the shift you are on is not going well I am just letting you know and it will effect your job performance, it could lead to me writing you up.” I told him call the guy who is missed, why are you telling me this and his reply “I do not like speaking to him, he annoys me, I rather tell you.” Another time he got mad at me because he told to do something and when I did it he is like “why are you doing this project I never said to do it” I think the man is on drugs to be honest.

The Transformative Impact of Passion-Driven Contributions in a Post-Work Society

As we envision a future where traditional employment is significantly reduced, it's essential to consider the potential impact of individuals pursuing their passions and engaging in activities they find meaningful. In a post-work society, passion-driven contributions can lead to significant advancements across various aspects of society, from scientific breakthroughs and technological innovations to the enrichment of arts and culture. Some benefits of passion-driven contributions include: Accelerated progress in research and development, as individuals are motivated to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of knowledge. Increased diversity and creativity in the arts, as more people have the time and resources to develop their talents and express themselves. Enhanced well-being and personal fulfillment, as individuals are more likely to experience a sense of purpose and satisfaction when engaging in activities they are passionate about. Stronger communities, as people connect with others who share their interests and work together on projects and…

Places that interview you, then inform you that they are in the “earlier stages” and it might take a month or two before hiring. Like WHAT?!?

Some high profile jobs I can kind of understand, but ones for retail or low-level education jobs for example, just WHY?? To keep hopefuls hanging on like that is really horrible.

Taking home less than $35k in SoCal should be illegal

I’m actually making $18.75 per hour, which is a few dollars more over minimum wage here State and federal taxes are ridiculous, in addition to social security, Medicare, and disability tax, wtf!!! I’m not even joking when I say I have about 23% in deductions each paycheck. 23 PERCENT I’m too afraid to do my taxes myself and make a mistake, so I have them done for me “professionally”. I’m getting back a total of just over $640. How is that even possible? Guess that’s what I get for being single with no kids. I was expecting back a few thousand. I feel so dumb I know the solution is “just get a better job”, but easier said than done. Why even apply somewhere low paying in the first place then? Hard to just go straight to max earnings I love CA but losing almost 1/4 of my pay is…

Managers = modern day slave masters

As someone who's in the tech industry, it is beyond me why we still adhere to this antiquated structure that originated hundreds of years ago. It is unfortunate that as companies get bigger, they get bloated with useless middle managers, and these same morons are responsible for overhiring the minions as part of their empire building who eventually get laid off during economic downturns. At my company, managers are mostly people managers, notorious for not contributing anything technically, and they still get to decide your ratings. Many managers would defend their positions saying that good managers serve as shit buffers, they set scopes for the team, blah blah blah, but the reality is many of them are just passing down orders from the top, where each layer dilutes the message. As for me, managers more often than not are just big elephants in the room, disrupting the team and ruining…
