The real implications of automation
TL;DR: Bill Gates is going to Terminator us so that we stop breathing his oxygen I'm seeing a lot of people positing one of two extremes, such as “We'll have HALO/40k tech by that time,” or “We're going to Fallout ourselves before then.” I'd like to offer an additional extreme position. Consider what most of our technological advancements have been in the last 50 to 100 years. Cars have been made faster and more comfortable to drive in, but that's not a huge development, particularly when you consider how car-centric countries like America are. Microwave ovens and refrigerators haven't seen much change since they became widely commercially available. Firearms still follow the same principles and mechanisms that they did in the 1920's. Railguns, lasers, flying cars, robots, cybernetics, space flight, and so many other things that were said would be commercially available for civilians have been “just a few years…
Maternity stuff..
Hey guys, just looking for a little reassurance here.. I just had my first baby in February. Before I left my boss told me to take all the time I need and when I’m ready to come back I can work whatever hours work for my family. I was under the impression that I was going to get 12 paid weeks off for maternity leave in the form of short term disability. Turns out the new policy in my state is 24 weeks, all paid. I was obviously super excited to spend time with my baby. My husband works at a school so he gets summers off. I’m really looking forward to spending all this time together as a new little family. A few days ago I got a text from my boss “checking in”. After a little bit of back and forth she tells me that one of the…
We can’t get a functional general strike, this might suffice.
As much as ChatGPT freaks me out…
It's been AMAZING for writing cover letters. Plug in the job posting, plug in your resume, bam. Quick and succinct cover letter and you barely had to do a thing. Also fuck cover letters.
We all agree that enough is enough. We all have our reasons 2-3 jobs and you can't even remember how a home cooked meal taste like… We can't pay bills… even though we are working full time. You live in a shoe box while the boss buys his second car and you are told that live is awesome. Your boss is asshole but you need the job and he knows it and just watches you struggle. You are stuck in a dead end job waiting for the day you simply perish with the hope it's early morning so you don't have to go to work for nothing. You have seen how a graph just shows that you won't have what people used to have for centuries. Get blamed that you lazy good for nothing even though the only thing you feel is tired. I think we can all say enough…
Not Getting Paid for Scheduled Work
I work as a guide who is paid a day rate. I was scheduled to work for a full day and came in ready to do so but the customer wanted to end the trip halfway. The customer still paid the company in full but the company only paid me half day rate and when I asked my manager about it, this is their response: “I am not going to pay you for hours you do not work. So, if you are slated to work a full day shift and you only work a half day shift, I am not going to pay you for a full day because you did not work a full day.” I understand if I quit halfway through then I should be paid only half day but since I was willing to work my full scheduled day it seems unfair that I get paid for…
