Please forgive the vagueness of the details. I have been in a technical role with a public employer in Ontario Canada for between 5 and 10 years. It's one of the many public sectors Doug Ford's government is trying to kill. Our group has been one of the lowest payed in Ontario and has been having serious trouble filling roles due to absolutely terrible compensation. No one is willing to work for so little. Although I'm happy with the work, rampant inflation and low pay were forcing me to start looking for a new organization. Our department manager has been fighting to fill an open role for months due to poor pay and pushed HR for a market adjustment in compensation so that someone might actually apply and accept the role. To much surprise and delight, the manager also pushed hard for my role to be brought up to market rate. I presume the manager saw the writing on the wall and knew they would never be able to replace this technical role at this rate.
Anyway, long story short… Remember, I am not making a great deal of money, just (barely) market rate for my role/sector/geographic area. So how much was my adjustment?
Nearly 30%(!) more. That's how poorly they have been paying university educated, experienced, technical professionals. I'm still going to keep my eye open, but at least now I'm not being FORCED to look for something else.
