Thank you to my boss who decided Friday at 4:45pm was a good time to conduct my first performance review. Verdict: it wasn’t good.
I was called into the office to a monologue regarding how he thought my performance has been substandard. I’m right out of college, and never received training for my role. I was given direction when I had questions and was left to my own devices. My job requires a huge amount of organization and attention to detail, obviously not my strong suits. Anyways, I was heavily criticized over my performance.
Then came the hammer. My told told me he pulled all my computer history and that I’ve been monitored for my whole tenure there. He did this nonchalantly; phrasing it out of the blue by asking how I would feel if someone stole my side-hustle idea. I was completely caught off guard because I haven’t told anyone at work about this. He proceeded by revealing that he’s seen everything I’ve done, from going on my email, to browsing for new jobs, and going on Reddit. He said I was stealing from him and the company. Even went as far as to say I was stealing by arriving at 8:34am instead of 8:30.
We don’t have an HR and I was never told I would be monitored. I feel violated but also recognize my own unprofessionalism. When I asked if he wanted me to stay on board he said yes. However, at this point all trust is lost. Our relationship is fractured and I don’t see a way back. Even though it feels like I’ve been fired I haven’t. Either way I think the best option is to clear out my office over the weekend and send him an email. I hate this job anyways. My only reservation is that he could sue me. He’s talked about all the time he’s gone to small claims court and I don’t want to be the his next victim. This is a gut punch. I can’t go back.
