Going above and beyond.

It may feel good to be extra productive but I'm not going to get rewarded extra for that so why should I do that? The only reward is that you will be expected to maintain that extra high output while others will get away with doing far less. This goes against the work ethic I have always had but I'm starting to get it now. If you're wondering I'm 48. I would like to hear other people's experience with this. Edit 1: I feel like if I did as little as everybody else (right from the start) then I would be fired for doing too little or that I would be the first to be fired if somebody had to be fired.
