Got bullied by my supervisor for how I laugh and then got laid off.

I started a job in October as a part-time receptionist. In January I was assigned a new supervisor who had joined the company after me. She wanted to change my role to full-time. She asked me if I’d be willing to go full-time for WEEKS and I said yes every time! She said my role would become a dual role, being receptionist and accounts payable. I sent an email asking questions about the role, a job description, and asked what the pay would be because she was very vague whenever discussing it with me. I expressed excitement about the change. A few days later she sent me an email saying I’d be interviewing for the role against the other part-time girl who works there.

(The other part-time girl’s dad works at the company, my chances were already bad.) Both of our roles were being diminished and replaced by this new role.

During the interview, she spent the entire time saying “all you do is laugh like a little girl, I don’t take you serious, I don’t think you wrote that email because you could never be that well-spoken, I never laugh, I’m nothing like you, etc” She kept going.

I asked what happens if I don’t get the job and she started laughing and said “I don’t know what to tell you.” Also the new role was triple the work and full-time but no raise and the “role was still being developed.” So…

Flash forward to my HR meeting with her, she said all of the same things in front of HR (but this time said I act and laugh like a teenager.) She got aggressive and said she’ll never take me serious and has already previously pulled me into her office to ask why I smile. She mentioned how she used to work at a law firm and I should be speaking the same formal way as I do in email and never laugh or giggle.

Between the time of the HR meeting and me getting laid off, about 7 days, I started receiving passive aggressive messages from the owner’s wife who happened to be her best friend and referred her to the company in the first place.

I’d like to point out a few things, one being that I rarely laugh and if I do it’s in response to jokes or when I’m anxious in a social setting, like a slight giggle. I always write professional emails and honestly I’m pretty composed in person too. Ironically she was always loud and cussing. She had already gotten multiple complaints about being rude. Lastly, she would talk about how much she hates her daughter but loves her son. She tried telling me to not allow anyone to speak to me, and brought up how much “attention” I get. She’s 20 years older than me and had a jealous undertone as much as I hate to say it.

Anyways, she had me restock the kitchen and then 5 mins later laid me off and made me hand in my badge. They gave the other girl the role despite her not knowing most of the tasks I already knew and was efficient at.

I hated the job anyways because they told me they watch me on camera every second and I wasn’t allowed to get up or use the restroom at all. And of course my supervisor had one-sided beef with me despite barely knowing me and me being well-liked by everyone else.

I hate small-business office environments and I am on the job hunt again.
