How my friend got screwed with relocation

He was hired from overseas to relocate to the US. The company paid for a plane ticket, paid for an apartment and car for a couple of months and helped him find another apartment. The overall cost of the services was billed to be over $70k and that was before Covid. If an employee quits they have to repay this amount. To add insult to injury, he was sent a tax form and had to pay taxes off that amount because that relocation “package” was considered income. He talked to a lawyer and they just shrugged and said can't do anything. If I ever take a relocation package, it will be cash.
