How should I handle this?

At the start of the Summer, I picked up an hourly position with a small Cafe that was preparing to open a second location. My position was not defined and I never signed anything except the basic paperwork and employee Handbook acknowledgement. I've effectively taken on a Consulting role without the title, and am doing everything from overseeing and programming the new POS system, ordering, staff training, menu development and more. I am and have been GROSSLY underpaid, when I've attempted to bring this up with the owner, he plays dumb and talks anecdotally about how he's been unable to give raises in the past. This has been annoying, but this has also been a part time job as I'm focusing on my personal business, and I'm really just doing this for extra funds. At the start of the Summer, I picked up an hourly position with a small Cafe that was preparing to open a second location. This has been annoying, but this has also been a part time job as I'm focusing on my personal business, and I'm really just doing this for extra funds. That was until it started taking over everything. More and more was demanded and I allowed it to happen until I kinda “snapped” and started applying myself appropriately for the hourly rate I'm being paid. I also happen to be working with a broken ankle atm, and I have surgery scheduled this week for it. Despite doctors orders, I've been showing up to the Cafe to help with our opening, on crutches and in pain, to make sure the POS runs smoothly- even though I could technically be WFH. (Owner hasn't been really cool about it, either, since it's inconvenient to him.)

(I did WFH Friday and was on call all weekend. I kept my eye on the systems and everything looked good.)

Today I was scheduled to close the store, but the owner told me last week he would charge it, as it's impossible for me to stand. Clock in time came and went, I haven't gotten any 911 emails or texts, so I assume everything is good. My surgery is in 2 days so Im making last minute arrangements.

The owner texted me an hour ago asking why I hadn't clocked in, and admonished me for “not clocking in all weekend” and said I've been absent from basically doing the one thing they hired me for. Im pissed! I wrote a response, but I'm not sure I like it because it sounds apologetic when really I think they're the AHs, and i kinda dgaf about this job at all.

So, reddit, what should I do?
