So I work as an inspector. My job includes going to a job site, making sure safety devices are functional and up to code, and then writing a report for city authorities and the customer’s insurance companies.
Recently, I was given an irregular task that I was actually excited to get: the customer requested a to-scale, as-built map be drawn with several different labels, including muster areas, bathrooms, the full “skeleton” of the building, fire safety equipment/device locations, and more. I like using my drawing software at home, and know this will get me a lot of work from home time.
However, I recently learned the median income of folks that do this specific task is around $31-32/hr. I make $20/hr.
I don’t think it’s fair to assign this highly irregular task without extra compensation, especially when I have schooling for these drawings and the median pay is so much higher.(since they assigned the first map, they’ve already assigned 3 more)
How do I go about this? I have no clue if this is intended to be a regular thing or a one off for a big client. I should at least get a raise as a sort of retainer fee right? Lol
I have already made the first map, but I haven’t submitted the final version.
