Antiwork

I was harassed and followed at my job, by another employee and no one helped me.

This happened YEARS ago but I was just reminded of this. I was working at a grocery chain where you can shop left. I was in the bakery section and I thought I was being hired to decorate cakes. Nope, not that. Oh well, I had a 10 month old, I needed a job and it was close to my parents so my mom could watch said child. Both of my parents have heart problems. Since my child was so young and my mom was alone, if something happened, I needed to have communication on me. I refused to leave my phone in a locker. This will come into play later. There was a baker who was a tall drink of asshole. He apparently would pick one person in the section and just make their lives hell for a week and then do it to someone else. This young guy…

This young guy he was being an add to, he got let go for being on his phone. Turns out his friend was in a bad wreck and was in a hospital dying and that’s why he left.

When this baker, I’ll call him lunatic, was telling us how it was because he was on his phone, I commented about how I need my phone in case something happens to my mom. He didn’t like that. So, I became his new target.

However, this hell for me would last way more than a week. He had me go across the store to get stuff from the freezer. It was boxes of cookies on the bottom of a pallet that was still wrapped. I didn’t dilly dally but this guy came into the freezer where we’re alone and said something along the lines of, “what’s wrong with you? Are you an idiot? Just bring me the fucking cookies already,” and before I could say what was taking so long, he was gone.

I generally just tried to ignore this guy. But then I found myself anxious just walking into the place. What made me go to my manager was I had a customer ask me a question. I went onto the floor to help her find the item and we made small talk. I could see “Lunatic” side step out of the bakery, look for me, throw his hands up and huff before walking away. He did that a few times before he screamed at my from far away. Enough that the customer I was with asked if I was okay…

I finally went to my manager, Bob. I cried. I told him all of the crap he was putting me through and I had enough. I thought maybe there would be some reprieve. I was wrong. I had my back to the bakery while I was preparing black and white cookies and I heard from behind me, “oh, I better be careful talking behind someone’s back or they’re going to go to Bob on me again,” and he laughed. I just went into the back, collected myself, and went on my break.

This time I went to HR. I told Clark what happened, again, I’m upset and crying. I felt very betrayed that Bob told Lunatic everything I said and that I said it instead of being neutral about it. Clark kind of just let me go on and on and I can’t even remember what he said would happen, but to no one’s surprise, nothing happened.

I gave it another few weeks and I had a vacation coming up. My vacation was already approved and while Bob was on vacation, I gave my two week notice. My second week of it was my vacation. So on my last day, I said goodbye and Bob was annoyed. I have no remorse for how I handled leaving and was relieved to never have to work there again.

A few years later, I went to a corporate gaming job where you don’t start the games. I was an assistant manager for about a year before I was asked if I wanted to interview for a store of my own. I hit the interview out of the park, well, at least I think I did, because I was getting promoted. While in my new store, I found out that Lunatic was fired for being a dick to one of the higher up managers. Also, who did I beat out for that promotion? The HR manager who didn’t help me.

Tldr; A baker harasses and stalks me at work, so I tell my manager. Manager tells baker what I said so I went to HR. HR did nothing so I left and my two weeks included a vacation. Years later, I find out the baker was fired for being an ass to the wrong guy and I best out that HR manager for a promotion with another company.
