I’m up against over 1000 potential candidates for a minimum wage night shift stocker job…

I don’t even live in a majorly populated area. Only 100,000 people live where I am, and most are the elderly and retired. When I told my dad, he said that he would have only ever expected 10 at the most to be applying for the job. How did it ever come to this? How can the job market be so bad and oversaturated that thousands are applying for a job that can’t even cover rent?
