Is “expected to notify” the same as “required to notify”?

I work in a lab in a university and, while I do want to work at this university, I do not know if I want to work at this lab anymore. I can't handle this stress and it's my first “real” job, but I know this isn't a normal lab. According to the university, people in my pay scale are “expected” to give a month's notice, but I don't think I can do this for a month more. I'm already at risk of a stroke and combine that with depression and anxiety. If I just took all my stuff and told them I'm gone, would that be okay for me or am I open to liability? Could this ruin any chance I have at working in a different lab at this University?
