Less knowledgeable/experienced peer promoted as my manager :-(

I work for a major company (~75k employees). I'm an expert at AI/ML (PhD), built teams in the US and India that have been wildly successful, solved a lot of extremely complex problems and got patents and products from them. My team is the top requested team to work on for data scientists in the company. I built relationships with other parts of the company and the managers of those teams want me to increase my team size to support them. Got 70% of my employees promoted at least once. All in about two years. Right before Christmas break manager asked to have a 30 minute meeting where he explained he's promoting a less experience fairly new hire peer as my manager. Made my Christmas break absolutely suck. ugh.
