Antiwork

My boss argued with me that annual raises “aren’t a thing” companies do. He’s worked for the same company for 20 years.

I’m coming up on another year with my company, so I approached my boss about a raise. The past couple years I’ve been denied due to Covid hurting business. When I asked this time my boss said “I don’t know why you think annual raises are a thing” to which I responded that I’ve had annual raises at every job I’ve worked, including the retail job I had in college. He continued to argue with me that I must’ve just been lucky to find jobs that do that. I pointed out that he got a job at this company out of college and hasn’t worked anywhere else since. I also asked how long I’m expected to work at the same pay despite inflation, especially considering how rent has skyrocketed in our city. His answer, “I don’t know, 5 years maybe, that’s when you get more vacation days.”
