my partner’s being written up for not showing up to work on their day off…

my partners boss texted them yesterday morning at 8am to, “be in by 10am today” with no explanation. We had plans, and it was their off day anyways so they just didn’t respond to the text. Later that night their boss texts, “just so you know it’s considered a no call no show to not respond and not show up”. They never signed any papers that said this was company policy, nor have they ever been informed of this. Now, their boss is going to make them sign a write up, or they will be fired. Why is this legal? We live in an at-will employment state which doesn’t require any notice of shift changes or overtime requirements. I fucking hate this country.
