My work is making us install a new VPN system on our personal devices and I’m not sure if it’s legal

As of this week every employee is required to install a new VPN on our personal devices in order to connect to the employee Wifi. This new VPN blocks us from using any social media app as well as Spotify and Apple Music. If you want to use one of these apps on your break you need to delete the VPN app and disconnect your phone completely, but in doing so it disconnects your work computer from the network and VPN. This new app is also tracking what we do on our personal devices, such as how many texts we send, what apps we try to open while connected, etc. We have an open policy that allows us to use personal devices while at work (and we’re also allowed to listen to music) so I’m really unsure as to why we’re all the sudden switching with such little warning. I’m also not sure if it’s entirely legal for them to track our personal device use, I guess in some capacity it might be because you’re technically at work but it still feels fishy.
