So I work at Starbucks as a shift runner and travel to work using a PEV (fuck paying for extortionate public transport fees and petrol). On Wednesday, I accidentally left some waterproof clothing that I use when the weather is shitty (as is often the case in the UK) in the back of house area that my manager had decided to clean out. I had Thursday off so when I came in to get my stuff on my shift on Friday, I found that none of it was there. Apparently my manager was ‘sick of the mess’ in the BOH area so decided to do a deep clean, during which he threw out everything that was there, including over £60 of my personal clothing. He claimed that my belongings must’ve been in a ‘discard’ box along with a lot of spare uniforms and aprons that also got binned. It was…
Reality check for please
I woke up to move my rental car and it wouldn’t start. I called into work to tell them I couldn’t come in today, which was 4 hours before my shift. At the start when I called off last minute before they had gave me a warning saying, I was only allowed to call off 4 hours or more ahead of my shift and I did just that. Come to find out I still got written up?? they say, I’ve been “calling off too much” and it reflects on my “attendance” when I already told them I have a legitimate reason for calling off. They say this because I was recently in an accident, March 25th and they know this. I have been using my sick pay to go to my appointments since I only have ONE DAY off as it is.. I have been working at this job for…
Some good news for a change.
I (25F) hate my job. I used to work in the service industry which was terrible, and I was pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. I knew I had to make more money to be able to afford the life I wanted, so I got into corporate. As terrible as the service industry was, at least work stayed at work – when I was off, I didn't have to give an ounce more of my time or thoughts to the job. Now that I work in corporate (HR) I have people messaging me on the weekends and after hours, and I'm expected to be responsive. I hate every hour during work as well – the fakeness, passive aggressiveness, and company politics are absolutely fucking nauseating. The made-up bullshit projects that people create and make me help them with just to look busy. The god damn performance reviews. This is also…
I joined because I wanted the union at my school to do union stuff. Fight for lower tuition and raised graduation rates, better pay for teachers, more tutors, paying college athletes what they make in games, union stuff. All the president wants to do is talk about micro aggressions and feelings with other black students. And plan fun events. That’s…cool I guess? But unions actually change stuff, right? Yet when I say an idea, the president is like “no, it won’t be on our agenda. That’s not our job. End of discussion. Your ideas are nice, but bsu will not include them.” Like…barely anyone comes to the meetings. There’s 4 people on the board. I’m like, can we at least vote on if my ideas should be acted on? She’s like, “no. This discussion is over.” It sucks because I’m so passionate about this group and have so many idea.…
I start a new job tomorrow, contracted 20 hours a week, but as I was going through my onboarding documents I found a form that, if I were to sign it, means that I waive my right to work no more than 48 hours a week. This is dodgy right? There was also a clause in my contract that states I consent to my property being searched at any time which set off alarm bells. I sent an email to HR challenging this and the WTR waiver, hopefully they respond ASAP cause I start at 9.30am tomorow and I'm not signing shit until I know my rights aren't going to be violated. I'm pissed off because I finally got a job after being unemployed for nearly a year cause I was too mental to work, I got the impression it was a laid back (by admin job standards anyway) place…
