This has worked surprisingly well. I hate when places don't advertise, but sometimes it looks like a decent job, so I call the company and ask to speak to HR to find out about the pay. It's saved me from applying to a few places, and encouraged me to apply for others that I normally wouldn't have.

This might be mutli layered with updates as there is a lot to unpack. In 2016 I stupidly attended a meeting with an organisation my parents are involved in. I've been to a few of these stupid meetings before but at the end of this one a member motioned to appoint me to a leadership position they desperately needed filled and no one was having a bar of it. I'm looking for jobs but have only ever worked for like one or two companies and have no idea what to look for as actually good.

I have been working since I was a teen I started with cleaning houses and landscaping. When I turned 18 I started working as a janitor. When I was around 22 I decided I needed something different or I was going to lose it. I joined a program that helps youth find a job. I was led to the company I'm with now. I help with operations and do admin work amongst other things. I learned a lot of skills and it was a great place to grow since the company was a start up back then. Since I was 12 I wanted to get my eye brow pierced. I was never a person to take risks. I decided to never get it because what if it affected me getting a job. I got it this year at almost 30. For reference – I’m about 2 months into this job and i’ve enjoyed it about as much as one can enjoy a minimum wage retail job. My coworkers are friendly and the environment is low stress/i like most of our customers. But it was only ever supposed to be a part time job. I have a degree and I live with my parents so this job doesn’t really matter much to me – it’s mostly just for some extra cash to buy miscellaneous things while I work on getting personal endeavors off the ground. And now i’m being scheduled for 5-6 day stretches with only a day off in between. Basically they taught us to write a resume, answer questions, apply for a job, etc. Keep in mind this was nearly 15 years ago. I recall them telling us the only good answer to what are your salary expectations is “Whatever you have budgeted”. It took me a long time to get out of that frame of mine. Idgaf about your budget, if you can't afford me you can't afford me. You get what you pay for though. It's still an awkward conversation to negotiate wage but I blame that partly in my conditioning.

So the janitor in my building, call him jim, prides himself on doing the work of many people all by himself. He is from the south sudan and was hired as a standard janitor doing 5 8 hour shifts for minimum wage. He didn't like how “lazy” other janitors were so he made it his mission to show he could keep the building clean all by himself. How does he do the work for 3 janitors 120 hours in 40 hours? He doesn't! His shift starts at 5 am so he shows up at midnight and works 5 hours off the clock clocks in, works his shift , clocks out and works another 3 before sleeping in his car.
