Having to go to work while grieving friend’s violent death

I have received news very recently that somebody who used to be a close friend of mine has been shot and killed. I'm barely able to function and the only reason I'm not constantly vomiting in addition to crying is because of the fact that I've been constantly smoking weed and doubling on my medication. and I have to go to work in 2 jobs to be able to make ends meet later today. I'm angry that I never get time I need to heal regardless of how hard I work, and it makes me sick to my stomach of the thought the next generation might have to endure this kind of thing.

People in the UK; what has been your worst experience with an employer?

Many of the posts that I see here are from the US. How have your experiences with employers been in the UK?

My job doesn’t really understand the word no

This is a throw away account because I don’t wanna use my main. I work full time in retail (won’t say the name) and since I do cashier, I’m required to “recruit” customers to sign up for a free loyalty program which is a big part of my job. I’ll be honest and say I don’t like talking to customers but I do get some people to sign up, good right? Yea, no. When I promote our cards to customers most say no or give me an attitude because all they want is to be rung out, So at most ill get about 3-6 people to sign up. But apparently it’s not enough to them. Every time I come into work, I’m being yelled at for not signing up enough people, they even said they don’t care about what I do I just need them to sign up. I’m sick…

Why do restaurant managers cry about how no one wants to work for them but still treat employees poorly?

I genuinely didn't think it was possible to have that little self awareness but I guess I still have a lot to learn.

i’ve decided to quit.

i’ve been working at a multibillion $ corporation for 3 years now. it started off amazing, great benefits, great team, great management. i can’t pinpoint exactly when it all went downhill, i started being overlooked for raises (as a minority) but i’d have the carrot dangled saying i should look into applying for them, they started hiring less competent people and i find myself with no raise and no training doing the jobs of people who have had a raise and the right training. there are days where i spread myself so thin and i do 4 roles at once (all while we’re fully staffed with at least 60 members at any time). this was my last straw, they scheduled me on my days off, and tried to reprimand me for not coming, and finally the management tried to tell me i was wrong about basically everything. i’m quitting, i…

I finally found a job I can tolerate

I’ve had about 40 jobs in about 10 years and I finally found one that’s okay.. benefits.. good supervisors.. full time.. easy work load.. I’ve been at this job for less than 4 months and I’ve only had one bad day. Today, some of us were brought into a meeting, they’re only taking so many people at one time for one meeting and we were told that the company we are working for (Call center contact work) is pulling themselves from the call center meaning my whole team is being transferred to another department. Pay stays the same but there’s two options one of those options means going from 25 calls a day to 200 or a second possible project. When I asked HR if that was the only two options “You are moving homes not being evicted, if you want to resign that’s your choice” I also was awaiting…

Was just fired after being hospitalized

Last Wednesday I got out of the hospital after being hospitalized for myocarditis. Worse pain I have ever experienced, but that’s not what this is about. I had started a new job and after telling them about the sudden hospitalization they seemed to be very understanding and helpful. During that time there was no indication that my position was at risk. They gave me my next shift (which was tomorrow) yesterday (even though I had a signed note saying no work for 4 weeks) but I accepted the shifts anyways as money is tight. This morning I woke up to a text saying they wanted to change the duties of my position. Instead of standing at cash and taking inventory, I would now be doing yard maintenance around the store. I have a heart condition and reminded them that over exerting myself could potentially cause greater heath issues right now.…

No amount of money ever bought a second of time….

Does anyone have experience of on the principle that the only reason to get a better job is to do less of it. I currently make more than I need, not by a massive margin but enough that if I never earned a penny more per year I would be quite comfy. The opportunity has come up about moving to the next salary banding range and my first thought was yeah I'll move up and immediately drop my hours to whatever matched my current income. Probably from 37.5 per week to 30 or something. 5 to a 4 day week. I always believed that if you paid me 10x my current salary I'd only really find it necessary to work 1/10 the hours.

FMLA should cover in laws.

My mother in law is dying. I have trouble even typing that, saying it out loud. I had to take a week off of work for an emergency trip home. I am not going to get into the details of her health, but there is a small chance she will survive with a surgery that she has to be strong enough for and has to live long enough to get. It’s limbo, and it’s awful. My work allowed me to take leave, unpaid, but they keep track of unpaid hours. I’m leaving the company, and I do enjoy working for them, but, like so many others, they are prone to retaliation. If I were staying, I could be screwed. Not to mention, I have a young child, and I’ve had to take all of my PTO for a million other reasons. There is no sympathy for taking off for in…

No bonus on payday but still bragging about beating targets!

We have been told in every staff meeting to expect a bonus on successful months and quarters. However, we didn't get one this month. And that's fine, shouldn't bank on a bonus anyway. While everyone is back to the grind, a director announces on the internal company feed on teams that we beat out targets out of the park! Now I have already found a new job, leaving later this may. I knew this kind of thing was going to happen. This puts me in an exciting position! Can anyone help me think of something witty to reply to the post with? I'd love to express what everyone is going to be thinking in the right way
