A lot has happened over the past 7 months so I'll try to be brief. Currently I'm working as a security guard at a hospital. I've been here for a year and a half working the night shift. Last July we get a new guy who's been a security guard for many years, just not at the same facility. He's twice my age, so I imagine he's not too keen on being corrected but if he does something wrong I gotta say something. One example of things I've had to say to him is “Don't invite nurses to sleep in your truck with you.” Within a month of being here he received several formal, written complaints. I see now how its so easy for people to “embezzle” money from companies. I just fell into a new role where I can pretty much “hire” who ever I want as a contractor and pay them whatever both I and the contractor see fit. My boss can approve up to a set amount each time and theoretically without any limit assuming the company has the money… They obviously do if the only person I have to go through is my supervisor. In summary, go into business for your self, make friends with a project manager at a big company with deep pockets and charge them what you think you're worth. I live in “flyover country” and housing where I am is just as bad as california. The news likes to blame rich transplants from either coast but i've lived here my whole life and have watched the laws change, the real estate market change, the economy change. The problem starts and ends with chronic underdevelopment of the economy, a housing construction industry that puts more resources into speculating on high-income residents who don't exist than on affordable housing, and a state that refuses to invest any resources in livability or support for anyone who isn't rich. Yes there are some migrants from california or New York but look at the numbers and it's still a very small influx. Most of our PhD's and 100k+ earners are from here or other small states. There isn't a California problem or a Texas problem or a New York problem it's a planet earth…

I have a job. This is about anti-work culture, which has grown increasingly cringe and dystopian over the years. Careerist (adjective): a person whose main concern is for professional advancement, especially one willing to achieve this by any means. I used to work in business protection in a large department store (over 200 employees) for one of the biggest retailers in the UK. I was also the elected democratic forum representative for our store, a position I went for on the basis that the only other person who went for it was an upper store management lapdog, and that didn't sit right with me.
