This is probably going to turn into a rant but if you make it all the way through I would appreciate some insight. Basically I work at this relatively small business. There are like 20 locations in total and only two in my state. I started when I was 17 and was working all the time. I had to work 12+ hour shifts with no real opportunity to take breaks. I was responsible for planning events, leading/teaching classes, handling customers and transactions, and cleaning/organizing the place because when I got there it was disgusting. Fast forward to now, I’m 18 and now the general manager. On top of those responsibilities, I also do all the shopping, baking, training, handle everything with the customers unless I genuinely don’t know how, and basically manage the store on my own. My boss recently had a new business endeavor that requires them to be…
My experience at US Foods
This warehouse is located in Woodburn, Oregon. It's the worst warehose job I've had and I've worked at many over the last 5 years. This is a union job, so if companies can get away with this shit, I can't imagine how far they will push it with non union. Your productivity clock started the moment you clocked in; if you stretched, went to your locker and got your equipment ready it was counting againts you. I had a coworker that arrived 20 minutes before his shift so he could get everything ready before clocking in just so he could make his numbers. You couldn't even go to the bathroom without feeling anxiety that your numbers were going down. As if this wasn't enough, every job I've had before had two 15 minute breaks but this one only had two 10 minute breaks. Why do the most physical jobs have…
Slavery and the labor movement
When discussing the labor movement in the united states, (white) people tend to refer to slavery primarily in analogy – such and such conditions constitute ‘wage slavery.’ Some even consider discussions of the continuing and historical relevance of slavery to be off topic in a discourse about workers’ rights, despite the fact that slavery is the site of struggle against capitalism where antagonism is sharpest, and despite there being more enslaved people today than in the antebellum south. The unionization efforts at starbucks and other chain service jobs are a favorite topic of discourse in online spaces like this one, but the slavery in their supply chain is rarely discussed in the same breath. One factor is that incarcerated peoples’ access to these discussions is even more restricted than they were historically. But the more likely culprit is that slavery was and is so racialized that it makes the white…
My official start time is at 8am but the boss wants us there at 7:45, I don't start getting paid until 8 so that already feels a bit like wage theft. Over the last year or so I've been coming in around 7:50 consistently, and I've had to call in sick a few times due to either being sick or having to deal with personal matters, one of those days being last Friday. Well when I got into work today my boss's wife said I can't work until I go over some paperwork with my boss going over the days I've been “late” or missed. My boss wasn't there at the time so I went straight home. So now I'm nervous they're going to use that paperwork as a reason to fire me or some other thing if I sign it, and I'd really like so advice from people here…
Really TL… TLDR; I began conversations about salaries at our company, people chimed in, I got an offer from another company, gave my notice, was asked not to return from a vacation before my end date – to be clear, was not fired, they merely “extended” my PTO and terminated my email and other work accounts. ——- I worked (technically still work, more on that below) as a programmer for a small startup that build software to support self-directed care (care outside of hospitals). They had a very do-goodery vibe – the founders were passionate about and respected in their field, they were very down to earth, had several good polices – complete salary transparency for everyone – there was a spreadsheet everyone had access to. They matched charitable donations you made, paid you your salary for volunteer work etc etc. They sold the company during the pandemic, partly so…
So this story is maybe a year old, and I am not going to name the people or company directly. If this ruffles any feathers, or gets seen. “It is what it is”. Anyway, I found a job on “insert job board here” for an onsite IT admin at the mid to end of “insert year here”. I completed a successful phone interview, and was offered an on site interview. I went to the on site interview, and all seemed good. “small, growing company/start up” that had different departments, kind of nice staff. a cool office, good perks. and on face value, the work being done was legit. I left feeling satisfied. Skip forward a week or 2, and I am offered a job. the company ask me for documents and what I would like to be paid. “just name the price”, and I was told that I would receive…

In Arizona, in 2022, for some godawful bullshit reason, breaks and lunches are not required or protected. This QT employee said she works overnights by herself and often doesn't eat for over 8 hours. She said she can't use the restroom when she needs to because they're too busy for her to leave the main floor for two minutes. She considers taking the trash out the only break she gets and she's working the whole time. She said she's new and doesn't want to make waves because they promised her a career path. Boy, I sure know that line of lies. She said she's lost 12 lbs in two months because she runs around sweating all shift. She's already quite thin. She deserves a freaking rest and a chance to get some nutrients. Who do I contact about this? I know my sole email or letter or whatever can't do…
