My friend got to see her Mum before she died

This happened about…11 years ago. I think. I worked in a supermarket, a high school kid. I had a friend. She was a fresh high school graduate. Her mum’s birthday was coming up, mum didn’t have a whole lot of time left. My friend was going to request time off to spend time with her mum on what would likely be her mum’s last birthday. She asked me if I’d cover. I said sure. Went to the manager. Manager said no. Friend said “screw them.” Didn’t show up for work. They called me in. Friend showed up for her shift the next day expecting to get in trouble. Instead, upper management heard why she’d took the day off and apologised for how she’d been treated. The other manager got in trouble for denying her request. My friend spent her mum’s last birthday with her mum. Her mum died a couple…

Federal Minimum Wage

So the current Federal Minimum Wage is set at $7.25 per hour. We are currently in the longest stretch since it has last been raised since it was first instituted in 1939. It has been the same $7.25 per hour since 2009. That means we are on our 14th year without an increase. I can't of anyplace in America where $7.25 can support anyone to meet even their most basic of needs. I counted 20 states where the state minimum wage is the same as the current $7.25 Federal Minimum wage. Almost all of these states are Republican states. Why doesn't this get more attention? I can't imagine that there would even be a debate that we are long overdue for an increase in the Federal Minimum wage. The most ironic part of this is that most of the politicians and voters who are against raising the minimum wage are…

We are all trying to get someone else to help someone out. Why don’t we start helping out each other

Forgive me if I'm breaking any rules, but, I believe a lot of us are on the same page but fighting and blaming each other a lot without even realizing it. We also seem to tell others to just seek state-driven services and aid without realizing that they are apart of the system too. I realized this after seeing the post about a pregnant woman who lost her job and is being blatantly harrassed by her previous employer. In no way is any of that OK, but we also tend to resort to simple solutions and answers such as “seek legal counseling.” We have to remember that not everyone has the financial means to afford a lawyer, nor much of the time or energy since most of that is taken away from our labor. Plus, those same people who have been “appointed” those tasks and jobs to help us are…

No I don’t want your snacks

I work as a nurse in a major hospital. They eliminated our pandemic bonus of $5/hr which is total crap because honestly what they pay us in my area is embarrassingly low. It really should have been a permanent cost of living adjustment. Seeming as we are at a high acuity and still are busy af. Anyway then the CEO and her goons come around offering a stupid cookie off of a treat cart for appreciation week. I would appreciate a living wage MAAM. Not a $0.50 crappy cookie. I just told her oh no we aren’t allowed to eat at the nurses station and our break room is being remodeled. Thanks tho. I DONT WANT YOUR SNACKS I WANT DECENT PAY.

Pandemic? What pandemic?

Note: I am vaccinated. I hate corporate america so much. I've been feeling like shit lately so when I noticed a gap in my schedule I was happy. A little extra time to rest and start feeling better or ride out whatever was coming. But no. First missed shift, I get a call from my manager. I don't answer because I'm off and not obligated to. I'm still scheduled the next day so I go in and find they updated my schedule without telling me, so now the break I thought I had doesn't exist anymore and I don't have any attendance points to spare. On top of that, I woke up with cold/covid symptoms today. I would have been off if they had left my schedule alone. I came into work because I have no choice, its either get fired or come in sick. So here I am, feeling…

Employer is claiming I abandoned my job even though they knew I was on medical leave

I was supposed to be on medical leave under FMLA through April 8, but since I hadn’t actually received any treatment yet I asked my doctor to fax in a request for another week. In order to make sure it was approved I logged in to my work email only to find a letter from the woman in HR who helped me initiate the claim which said I had abandoned my post, and it would therefore be considered a resignation (I’m assuming to deny me unemployment). This has to be illegal, right?
