The American Dream is Toxic
Dear Antiwork, Hi! I’ve been a follower of the sub for some time now, and I must say: I’m with most people on this sub, and it has been eye-opening what some of you go through on a daily basis. I’m not here to give another ‘I had no idea’ speech (I had an idea from the moment I started working, I have my own work-100-hours-a-week-and-forget-appreciation experience). Rather, I’m here to talk about the company I’ve been working with for a little over one year now, ABB. (I joined them at the start of 2021 as Marketing and Communications Specialist for the Motion business division in Belgium) I framed the following in a little bit of a ‘Q&A’ way, to keep it easier to read. These are solely my opinions, and I want to clarify I hope you understand I’m not trying to act in bad faith here. Have a…
Hi there, I am a Kroger part-time Nightstock worker that over the holidays made an arrangement with management after my job regularly had me clocking over 40 hours. I specifically signed up for part time work and have turned down 3 promotions to full time. The arrangement was to only be scheduled 4 days a week, 8 hour days so 32 hours in total and most of the time I have been clocking 30-36 which I am happy with, but now they are starting to go back on that agreement and scheduling me for 5 days a week again when we have 2 open full time positions that have yet to be posted to Krogers internal jobs board. I like my job, my supervisor is great and is a union steward themselves. But I only hate my job when they screw with us with stuff like this. I would rather…
Don’t just say “abolish capitalism” be specific, what about it? Monopolies? Billionaires? Or “we want a livable wage” ok how much is a livable wage? We need to start planning, have a plan set in motion because I’m tired of this shit too
Segregation is not diversity.
My previous workplace (restaurant) proclaimed about being diverse and accepting. They accepted gay men, but lesbians were made fun of. They had one black person working there (they had two venues and there was only one black person at each establishment. Coincident? I think not.) FOH were all white, polishers were Asian (from one specific country that attracts the most white sexpats) and BOH were Nepalese and Latinos. They claimed their style was from the 60s. I walked out feeling like I just came out of the sixties. Edit: Honestly, the first red flag was when the manager claimed about having Irish ancestry. From my experience, when people bring up their ancestry, ethnicity or ask you about yours, they're racist. I know Irish has a history of being discriminated against, but to become a racist yourself is just as bad. Edit 2: Not sure why people are bringing up about…

Bootlicking culture at work
Alright, I think I've lurked enough. Gonna share a little something on the work culture in the country where I currently work. This country is perhaps the stereotype of living in absolute luxury, that is not the US or anywhere in Europe. Here's a couple of instances I can share with you: Literally every boss, manager, executive is addressed or referred to as (name) Sir/Ma'am. When I came in, I straight up asked for their names, shook their hand as I introduced myself, and called them as their names. They couldn't so much as process that I didn't add a “sir” or “ma'am” suffix. I don't work in the military. This is done even outside of work – and I wish you could see the look on their faces. When a person of senior rank or position gives a direction, there's almost no questioning, and the world turns into a…
