This was supposed to be a comment to another thread, but it got locked and I thought it warranted its own post. I am truly seeing that so many older aged people have a terrible retirement. Especially the baby boomer generation. It seems that dedicating yourself to work from age 20-65, and then retiring with no friends, hobbies, or support doesn't lead to a happy life. I think most are realizing that the retirement they dreamed about, of relaxation and fun, isn't all it's cracked up to be when you are in your 60s, have never exercised or eaten properly, have no physical, or really any hobbies besides TV, and no social friend groups outside of maybe 1/2 people. Now what do you do? My uncle for example doesn't do anything. He wakes up, walks the dog, watches TV, and sometimes cooks dinner if his wife doesnt. That's it. He…
Original: https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/suc6gv/my_corporate_job_has_been_ruining_my_life_for_six/ So it's been a bit over a week and things got interesting. I've ghosted jobs before but never had this happen. Last Friday, I grabbed my favorite mug, cleaned out my desk, and wrote up an “I quit” email saying specifically that for my boss, and as habit, I often use “send later”. I really should have just not done anything but my boss is kinda nice to me but I am starting to think I did not hit send later out of pure adrenaline of just leaving this god-awful job. Guess Outlook was a comrade and said, “Nah, just leave girl”. But holy cow… So they like blew up my phone with phone calls and texts (did not listen to all the voicemails, read the emails, nor texts) this WHOLE WEEK and contacted my emergency contacts which neither replied back to. Last night, my boss' boss…
So an update to this post. She worked last night, but the manager she needed to talk to wasn't there, so she went in this afternoon to speak with the manager and the manager immediately tipped her hand by worriedly asking if she was there to call out because she doesn't have enough workers. She's scheduled to work tonight. She told her that she couldn't work all those hours and they tried to pull that “well, we can't change the schedule” bullshit, but she wasn't having it, she told her that she couldn't work those hours and her boss got the point and now my daughter understands the power of labor. Employers hate this one simple trick And the best part is, it's not some secret we don't want getting out. Unlike some other things that are ruined by more people knowing about them, this is only improved. The more…
So they want to keep me on “to pay me” through the end of March, which is good, but they also want me to train my fucking replacement? Am I like, required to do this for them to pay me? Their reasons for firing me were simply that it’s “not working out.” I have worked here for 2 years, during which my brother killed himself, and I only took 5 days off and then came to work every single day and busted my ass. I’m just so upset and don’t know what my options are.
Was a general manager overseeing 24 employees in a luxury industry until the lockdown. Have spent countless hours looking for a proper job (livable wages, benefits) and customizing my cover letter for each job I apply to and I have yet to be even offered an interview. Wondering if many of the “available jobs” out there are companies fishing but not hiring OR menial jobs. Shocked how, despite my experience / qualifications, I cannot manage to find either an in person or remote (most ideal) living wage job in any industry. How are people managing?
Leaving work after 6.5 years
Yesterday I gave my 2 weeks notice to my boss. I have been working for this company in a low management position since November 2015. My boss's reaction was so insulting, he just told me: “ok, we will work on a transition plan”. that's it!! no, I'm sorry you leave or thanks for the 6.5 years you gave to this company, NOTHING! I was one of the first employees of this company and I'm the most senior one. and just like this, 6 years of hard work and effort disappear. I'm now happier than I've made this decision, and I will never put work in front of my mental health ever again.
