penalized for equipment not working? is that legal??

Hello, I work from home and had some issues with my PC. I had voiced that it was very very very slow many times before this happened. One morning I was about 3 minutes late logging in, but my PC didn't want to even let me timestamp much less join the remote meeting. I couldn't even text my sup at the time that I was late due to equipment because my phone had died. First time this has ever happened. I got in at 913 and was told sorry, I'm being issued “half a point” because I couldn't text her before my shift thanks to a small oversight in charging. I had plugged in my phone but the cord had come loose. No one before this had told me what to do to fix it. Finally got IT to help and now I'm not having issues. Even with this as…

Just venting a little

Started a new job because my old one got toxic and everyone was leaving. Started this job Monday, Zero training they said stay with Gabriel he will help you out. Gab didn’t help in any way and was slow at the job. Wednesday they say your doing great we are going to need you to take charge of Gab and get him to do more. I tired he ignored everything I said or told him to do. Some safety issues and some issues of him just not caring or trying. Friday come and they said “You have to make sure Gab finishes his work if he doesn’t finish it’s your fault for not leading him” He didn’t finish his job after me telling him to. Told the boss and he told me to try harder. Expressed this with the assistant manager (1year there) she said “ they only hire people…

My Friend Wrote a Book About Work

Hi there, My friend wrote a book about work and American's unhealthy obsession with career and work. I'm not sure if it's okay to promote it here, especially as I haven't read it yet, but I thought it was really topical for this subreddit and I'm excited to read it myself. From the Amazon page: “From the moment we ask children what they want to “be” when they grow up, we exalt the dream job as if it were life’s ultimate objective. Many entangle their identities with their jobs, with predictable damage to happiness, wellbeing, and even professional success. In The Good Enough Job, journalist Simone Stolzoff traces how work has come to dominate Americans’ lives—and why we find it so difficult to let go. Based on groundbreaking reporting and interviews with Michelin star chefs, Wall Street bankers, overwhelmed teachers and other workers across the American economy, Stolzoff exposes what…

No fire alarms at work.

I was told that I can't wear headphones at work because it's a fire safety hazard. I work in a warehouse made of plywood with very few exits (the place is essentialy a labyrinth of doors and hallways, there's also an upstairs area that I spend half of my day with the only exit being a 20 foot drop) and NO FIRE ALARMS. So who do I tip off about this obvious death trap since theyre so worried about fire safety? I'm also aware that we are overdue for a visit from the fire cheif which keeps getting mysteriously pushed off…

Potential employer is worried my family will get in the way

I recently got laid off from an ok job. I’ve been applying to everything within my skill set, just to make ends meet. So, yesterday I spoke with a potential employer over the phone for approximately 20 minutes. He decided we should meet in person. It seemed like a decent job, and something I could see myself doing. The first half of the 20-30 minute interview was pretty typical. Until the second half. It was basically just questioning me about “who stays home with your kids when they’re sick”. “Who has to take your kids to school, and who picks them up? Because we need you here to work when it’s time to work.” I ended the interview then and there. Obviously this company cares more about their profits than their people. I need the money, but I love my kids and they’re my world, not an obstacle to hurdle…

We are now living in a nickel-and-dimed, micro-transaction, IAP, subscription, spam-ridden, shrinkflation corporate ad hellscape.

I can’t be the only one who’s felt like our lives are just dominated by corporations trying to squeeze every single last dollar out of the general public. And they’re doing so in such underhanded and sly ways now. Sure in the 80s we got served commercials for TMNT action figures, but now it just feels like we’re squeezed for every single little thing. Everything is an upsell add-on additional purchase. Want heated seats in your car? $19.99/mo. That kind of thing. In the early 2000s my local mall took out its centerpieces, this wonderful wrap-around fountain area the size of a mid-size home and replaced it with pop-up coffee shops and phone case stands…and it’s surprising that that mall is still even operational. Corporate squeeze equals paying people the bare minimum while squeezing the same people for every single little item.

Stop doing extras for your boss. Only give what you are paid to give, nothing more.

This was something that took me a fair amount of time to understand. Before I worked for myself, I was the guy who would be giving 150% at all times, pulling the weight of multiple employees because my pride demanded it. I thought to myself that by showing how valuable an employee I was, I would get noticed and be promoted over those who half assed it every day. I was so wrong. I learned this lesson when working in a manufacturing plant, we built containers used for waste disposal. When I first started, it was like any other job where you put in your 8 to 10 hours a day, and sometimes got bonuses when things were going well. Over time as new management moved in, bonuses became less and less frequent, and the hours went from 8 hours a day, to 12 hour days six days a week…

Psychoanalysed without consent by arrogant CEO and his wife during two separate job interviews.

A few years ago I applied for a job as a “communications officer” in a now dissolved energy company in the UK. I’m unsure if I can actually say the company name on here as a quick google search will reveal the now ex-ceo and his wife’s identity, and that could be a rule violation. But lets just say the first part of the company name may or may not rhyme with “steeples” and that this company was an energy provider. After applying, I took a phone call with the CEO’s wife. Let’s call her Sharon. Sharon asked me to prepare a social media communication plan for their growing company, and to send it to her. I spent many unpaid hours researching their outreach, their demographics and current content. And many more putting together the proposal. I sent the plan, and was invited to an interview. So I pop down…
