“Safety Concerns”

I'm not sure why it's bugging me so much but it is so I need to know if I'm overreacting. I'll still be upset even if a bunch of strangers on the internet tell me I am but I'd like to know what the overall opinion on this situation is. I work for “ABC Company” and we do a full inventory twice a year. Most inventory can be done during the week but because of our work load, we have to do some inventory on a weekend day. It's overtime so I don't mind working on my day off BUT what I do find annoying is the time I'm expected to and/or not allowed to come in. I like getting to work as early as possible so I can leave as early as possible, especially if it's the weekend. My normal hours are 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday with an occasional 7am start.

Well, I asked a supervisor (Amy) if I should ask the big boss (Lucy) about coming in at 5am so I could be off by 10-11am and Amy said I could ask Lucy but to prepare myself for a hard no. When I asked why it would be an issue, Amy said “safety concerns”. We don't work in the safest neighborhood but we do work in a secure building AND job site meaning you have to have a code to get into the parking lot AND a badge to get into the door. I can understand the safety concerns of walking through the parking lot when its dark BUT what I do not understand is, there is always someone getting to work, alone, between 5-6am and that person is alone until I get there at 8am. So from Monday to Friday, there is someone walking through the parking lot at 5-6am AND I leave the building alone when its dark at 5pm.

I got a text from Amy saying Lucy said no and that 7am is the earliest. This means that after I asked Amy if I should talk to Lucy, Amy talked to her. What was said on the phone is unknown but I have some ideas.

Something about the “safety concern” reasoning is bothering me so much. It's making me not want to agree to work on weekends anymore or honestly, work for them at all. I have been at ABC for almost 2 years. I have an alarm code and have been the opener (5-6am) a few times but the one time I want to come in early to get in and get out, I can't because of “safety concerns.” I fully plan on speaking with Amy and Lucy on Sunday to get more clarification but until then, am I overreacting?
