So I’ve posted about my company before when they released the new salary handbook that actually had a paragraph discussing the open sharing of wages and compensation between employees. It was the exact opposite of all the other posts you see of company policies prohibiting the discussion of compensation.
Well, they have just pulled off another win in my book. We have a new policy of what they call summer half days. For 16 weeks over the summer all salary employees are allowed one half day a week off for free. Due to the nature of the business they couldn’t just let everyone leave at lunch on Fridays or we would have issues, but everyone is allowed to take a half day once a week as long as it’s worked out with whatever team or department your in so coverage is maintained. It can be either the first half of the day or the last. I’ve come to enjoy coming in once a week at lunch rather than leaving early.
Just an example of a company that is actually trying to do the right thing.
Just remembered that a year ago they added a paid parental leave for fathers when they have new kids. It’s only 4 weeks but still better than any other American company I know of. Another win for my company.
And just to bring it all back to reality, my company still has issues. My biggest pet peeve lately is the common trope of being willing to pay way more for new employees than properly compensating current employees. I just lost a guy that would have stayed for $5k more a year but they refused. Meanwhile they had just hired a new guy for $20k more who was/is less than half as useful as my guy that left. Go capitalism!!!!
