Why do people work long hours?

Wednesday I worked from about 9:30am to 8pm. Yesterday I worked from just before 9am to 7pm. I feel drained. This was definitely a one-off and my decision. It actually makes me appreciate my ‘normal’ hours where I am start at 9:30-10am, sometimes even later, and leave before 5pm. This morning I’m making up my hours. I’m going to exercise in the morning, come in for 11am and leave at 4pm. I’m also taking my full hour lunch break. Two days of, what I consider, long hours. I hear in high finance or banking roles it can be starting from 7am and 11pm, with no opportunity to ‘make up hours’ like I can. Why? I do an extra 2-3 hours and I just can’t do it. The money isn’t worth the cost of time and my health. Life is too short for this every single day.
