Why do they make hiring hard?

It sounds like something a pro-business paper would title an article with, but it’s true. Employers make hiring hard on themselves and it’s dumb. They have my resume, they have an interview, maybe they even have some sort of assessment Center or aptitude test. And they certainly have the power to fire people that don’t work out. So why do they need three more interviews plus a whole extra company that pre-screens their applicants? Why do they need the contact details for previous employers who have already provided a written reference and will never be called anyway? You’d think our corporate overlords would use their ability to dictate the terms of the system for something other than shooting themselves in the foot. I get why they waste my time, but why waste their own time?
