A business isn't just your own personal passion project. If you hire people, you are directly responsible for their quality of life. If you can't accept that responsibility, don't have a business. If people spend half of waking life making you money, they should be able to afford not compromising the other half. I have no sympathy for business owners who are being run out business by rational increases in the minimum wage. If they're so unable to ensure that the people who give their limited time on earth to them are fairly compensated, they can go join them in fairer compensation as workers themselves

I don't mind being available 24/7 for my child. If she cries I will do my very best at any time, I'll lose sleep, I'll be stressed, I'll have no break, I'll do multiple tasks, I'll put more and more effort everyday to watch her grow. Remind you of something? Yet she doesn't exploit me. I'm not replaceable to her. My position can't be terminated out of the blue. I can't be anything else. If you're replaceable, if you're exploited, if you work hard for something that is extraneous to you, if you go to work as a duty to get back to your family, You're not family. You're asking for 100 giving 0, using words that have no mean in that context at your favor, trying to make people feel guilty because they don't feel that connection, that affection that they shouldn't feel, because they're not home – and…

I got into programming cause I think it's fun but mostly cause my whole life people were telling me that if I get a CS degree then I'll graduate and immediately start making 6 figures. I graduated in December after 6 years of college and immediately learned that shit was a lie. It took me months to get so much as a response from any company and now that I finally managed to get hired somewhere I'm barely making ends meet. And looking around I still feel pretty lucky. What the fuck is happening?

We recently got a pretty substantial raise at work. It was about $4 an hour for me. I guess I should just be grateful but one thing bothers me about it. We will now be getting a raise every 2 years on even years. 2 years, 4 years, etc… But I was 1 month shy of hitting one of those 2 year levels when they implemented this. So even though I now have 10 years in I have to wait until I have almost 12 years in to get my 10 year raise. I think as soon as you hit one of those levels they should give you the raise.
