I’m 24 years old in my 3rd year of my plumbing apprenticeship. I run my own truck now and have a helper that looks like he’s 12. Nearly once a week a customer gets actually upset that I’ve shown up to their home to do work for them due to my age. Once we had a customer open the door and immediately tell me they weren’t letting me touch anything and cancelled the appointment. I understand where they’re coming from. What gets me is all the people that hate on college and say DON’T GO TO COLLEGE, JOIN THE TRADES!! Like it’s the best possible thing to do(it’s not), so I do that, and they still find something to get riled up about. Do they think the company is going to send a 50 year old man with a worn out back to wrestle with and replace your water heater?…
Month: May 2023
I know the idea of antiwork overall is the abolition of the current working culture as is, but I think part of that process can, and should be, a concerted effort to help people, especially the younger generations, understand what options we all have to push back against illegal work practice. There was a recent post in another group about a company stealing through wage theft. Wage theft is probably one of the biggest types of theft that happens, but most people do not know what wage theft is or how to recognize it. Also in the thread a lot of people were commenting on “right to work” laws. I think a lot of people think that “right to work” laws allow companies to pretty much fire anyone they want for any reason without any repercussions. While it is true they can fire you, what happens around the firing may…
I had 2 interviews about 3 weeks apart, the first was making $19/hr and i was offered the job immediately, I told them i would let them know in 2 weeks since i was still at my previous job and wanted to give notice. I was still looking around because even though this was better pay than i ever got there was no opportunity for growth in this role, in 2 weeks I was contacted for an interview at another company making only $16/hr but i could go much farther in this role than the first job so i contacted the first job and was extremely upfront bc i knew they really wanted me, i told them i had another interview and i wanted to see where it goes and if i could have another week to decide. so i do the interview and i’m outright offered the job but…
Manager upset at my leaving
I've only worked two jobs so far, with me currently still at my second. My first job was at a smaller, local grocery store. I was there almost two years. I did wayyy more than my pay grade. I ran the register, helped work the truck in Frozen and dairy, scanned reclaim while also helping put things out for the deli manager. Doing this I was only making $9/hour. I did some job searching and decided on a bigger grocery store. $13/hour. I was hired so I went to put in my two weeks of course. The assistant manager of the grocery store was always super nice. She worked with you in what ways she could. She asked where I was going when I said I was leaving and she congratulated me and wished me luck. The store manager didn't have the same reaction. The assistant Manger informed the store…
https://www.quality-programmers.com/index.php It says “they work 160 hoursweek for you”. is this…a mistake or typo? Does it mean a group of people? Anyways this isnt sketchy or dodgy -its downright suspicious. What do you think? the photos lead me to believe the workers are from India. It announces ways to cut your paying price and the amount of hours of work you get done for you.
At my limit working luxury retail
Don’t know where to start with this, it’s been a long time coming but I think I’m at my breaking point right now with work. Also I am Australian so everything is in AUD I have worked for a luxury brand as a full time client advisor for about 7-8 months. 2 months ago they completely changed the commission scheme to the point where it’s been more than halved… Not for any good reason, the company is doing better than ever let me tell you. They justified the commission cut by “increasing” the annual salary by $2k, however they removed a bonus that we’d receive every pay cycle. This essentially means that my salary has remained stagnant while my commission got halved. My breaking point was this last pay cycle, I have been burnt out working full time while also juggling full time studies and how much commission did I…
We just can’t win.

Boss’s buddy praised my boss for a great idea on LinkedIn. My boss liked the post. Most of the company’s senior leadership liked the post. One even reposted it. Funny part is that I gave him the idea. In writing. This is not the first red flag. There have been many, but this is the one that finished it off. I’m done. Still haven’t decided what to do with the info. Let’s call it “the plan”. Once I have lined up my next job I’ll put “the plan” into action. No, I’m not going to quit & find something. I’m at the level we’re it’s better to do planned moves. I’m working on a position that comes with a bit over a $21k raise, is in area I have deep knowledge and experience in, and is a heathy work environment. I’m thinking about sending screen shots to the the board…
Not paid time and a half for Overtime
I had a w2 job back in 2019, where I was working 80+ hours a week for a decent portion of the job. I recently learned that in Illinois you are required to pay time and a half if an employee works overtime here. I was only paid for my time during that role, so if I worked 60 hours a week, i got my rate for my extra 20 hours. am i entitled to time and a half? and if so, how do I follow up on this? This company is notorious for fucking it's workers over, so I don't want to be one of those people.
